I wanted to reply to an on-going thread but it was on Daily Chuckles so figured I'd start a new one here.

I really think it won't be long before EV's are taxed for mileage. If your state does inspection, they get your odometer reading once a year and could tax you on the miles driven. Yes, that would only work for the state the vehicle is registered in.

In Massachusetts the gas tax is $0.24 and if you get 24 MPG (make the math simple ) that's a penny a mile. Now if you do the average 12,000 miles per year, that tax would be $120.

Federal tax is $0.184 or roughly $0.0076 which would result in another $92.

I think big brother's solution is there for EV's. Not sure how they would handle hybrids or plug-in hybrids

Yes they can, I get up dates from GM about my truck about once a month tires brakes mileage oil everything
Newest trend is pay for play…load the car with options but charging a monthly fee to use them 😉 They may throw in a 30 day free trial 😉

(If you have a new enough vehicle they can program it over the air while it’s in your driveway 😉)

I chose not to go with the pay and play stuff.

On star navigation was horrible. For giggles I tried it out when I had the free 30 day trial. I got denied the free 90 day trial because I refused to give them my credit card number.

On star wanted to take me some convoluted rou d about way home from work. It would have added an extra 30 minutes to the commute. That's when I knew they were FOS 😁😁😁😁😁

I have android auto in both vehicles, so I just connect my phone and get better directions as well as the other goodies.

Service truck is wired 😱😱😱😱 They can tell if I'm wearing my seat belt or not. Average speed 😁😁😁 Had some heads spinning in the corporate office in Connecticut over that one. Along with a phone call from said department. 😎😎😎 They weren't happy that the rev limiter was engaged while I was coming across Texas 😂🤣😂🤣 I ended up having to snap a picture of the speed limit sign and point out that in fact I wasn't speeding. I was actually 4mph under the speed limit. 👍👍👍👍👍 Cruise control won't go any higher then 81mph. Speed limit was 85 on that stretch of highway 😁😁

I get notices when the oil change is close to coming due with current mileage as well as it popping up on the service screen.

some states have tried the pay-by-the-mile deal as a pilot program. Experimenting, if you will. I think ORegon and maybe Idaho? Don't remember. IIRC the drivers who participated had a device installed on the vehicle that tracks the miles driven.

states that have inspection, we used to here, can log the mileage and then supply it to the DMV. Well, a speedometer cable is real easy to disconnect, as is a VSS (even easier), or easier yet, reprogram the odo. Lot of ways around it for someone who wanted to.

What they found was that some cars, it's not possible (too old) and some drivers don't want their personal information (their routes taken, where they're going, how fast they get there, how fast they got back, etc) known and I can't say I blame them. I certainly don't trust the government, not enough for them to know where I'm at and where I was. I ain't got nothing to hide, but I just don't like the idea of them knowing everything. Some say they can track you with the cellphone, and there's truth to that, but I don't have to carry the phone with me when I go somewhere if I don't want to.

So, for EV they are charging an extra I think $200 for registration fees + a EV excise tax at the end of the year in this state. Also the personal property tax is higher for EV. So they're getting the money out of you, just not in gas tax. Not to mention what they charge you to charge if you use a public charging station.

My personal property tax doubled this year. 😱😱😱😱😡😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

They should be taxed much more to pay for the solar tax credits and such pork.

the collector got a call and I asked why. They said that they didn't charge enough last year. So that makes me think they're making up for it this year. with a forced increase. I know some folks in other areas and I'm gonna do some digging on this. It sure looks shady.

In Nevada we've had to report vehicle odometer readings for the past couple years. Cannot renew vehicle registration without reporting your odometer reading. Getting us ready for when they start adding surcharges for vehicle miles driven.

Illinois currently charges EV $100 fee per year. The original bill was for $1,000 yearly fee, but the final version of the law that passed was $100 per year.

In addition, they had proposed per mile tax, but the push back was so great they decided to drop it, for now.

Isn't it ironic how they "miscalculated", and then they've got a $1,600,000,000 SURPLUS?

That's 1.6 billion for those that can't read all the zero's. Or, $533 (I think) for every single person in the state.

Since that's our money that WE spent already, they outta give it back to us if they don't spend it. But I guaranteed they won't. Usually they'll get rid of it somehow, sweep it under the rug, etc.

When I worked at the capital many moons ago, one of the things I saw was when there was a budget surplus, they'd spend a whole bunch of money to even things out. Good example, they had a significant (but not 1.6B) surplus in 1998 I think it was, so rather than the news get the story, they remodeled everyone's offices with new furniture. That wasn't quite enough so they hired some more people to do janitorial work at the capital building, they were temp workers. That was their only purpose, to get rid of some money. At least they paid pretty good ;)
