I’ve got a 06’ MX-5000. I’d been moving brush for several hours up and down a hill. On my last run going downhill the engine started knocking very bad (similar to when it’s in too high of a gear) then the engine shut off. I tried to start it while I was stopped on the downslope but it wouldn’t. I wanted to get the brush to the bottom of the hill so I coasted to the brush pile and lowered my front end loader. I didn’t have time to do any troubleshooting bc I had to leave town for work. I had my wife try to start it yesterday and she said it only cranked initially then blew out a lot of smoke and started up. I had her move it into the barn and shut it off and try to restart. She did this and it started up multiple times.
Any suggestions or ideas? Yes it started but I suspect it will do this again. Is there something in the fuel tank or a fuel pump that could cause it to stop on a downslope if it’s going bad? Thanks for any help

I had a look at Kubparts diagram... it's possible you have 'something' in the tank that 'semi floats' around and started to plug the spigot. BTDT with my BS23S. The ONLY way to be sure, is to remove the tank, drain and inspect. In my case it was a small, black chunk of plastic that wedged itself into the 'spigot'. Yeah, one roayl PITA to get tank out, but ONCE I FOUND the problem , 'easy' enough to fix. I also added a 'filler neck' screen to be SURE nothing gets INTO the tank.

That’s a great point. I also added some fuel just prior to the incident. Could’ve been something that came out of my gas can

you did say "gas" can ......... I know you meant diesel can!

Sounds like a filter clogged or as mentioned a restriction in the tank that comes and goes.

May very well have a piece of alum foil used to seal some containers or a plastic lid from something got in your fuel tank.

or a leaf or beetle wasp hornet or whatever. I've seen all those. Fuel can lid, pine needles, dirt, algae too. Or, perhaps there could be some contaminated fuel, e.g., water or gasoline in the fuel. I had one show up once that was full of E-85. And another that was full of sand (vandalized), and I remember one from over 20 years ago that was full of used engine oil, got dumped into the fuel can.

Every time I see a mention of fuel starvation I mention the following. It is a long shot, but someone gave this tip to me and it saved me a lot of wasted time on my tractor trying to find out what was wrong.

Try starting with fuel tank cap loose. If it starts, you have clogged fuel tank cap breathers. In my case the tractor "died" way into the woods. Wouldn't start until I left it alone for hours. Then it started but would not rev up past an idle. Someone on this forum mentioned the fuel cap thing, and problem solved. Fuel exited the tank has to be replaced by air coming in, or a vacuum forms. No air in, no fuel out.

CHECK FUEL CAP BREATHER should probably be first on all fuel starvation troubleshooting lists.

Good luck with it!
