BH77 w/ 24" bucket clay

I just bought a 3200 with a BH77 that came with a 10" trencher bucket. I'd like a second larger bucket, is this backhoe strong enough to use a 24" bucket in heavy clay

Can’t speak for the 24”, I have a 16” on mine and in the clay here in Louisiana it can be slow going at times.

I just traded in a B3300 with a BH77 for a L4701 and BH92. I had a 12" bucket on the BH77 and in clay it was about all I would want. In fact, some say a 24" bucket is too much for the BH92 in hard soil and the 92 is a LOT more machine than the 77. Others that have both a small bucket and a large bucket say they find the going actually faster with a smaller bucket. Remember, these are not dedicated backhoe machines but a compromise, do a lot of task machines.

I have a 16" on my BH77, heavy clay slows it down but it does the job. I would be concerned about using a 24" bucket. May be that a 16" would be overall faster?

OK, the 24 is out...which is what I thought.

I found a new 18" for $450 + $100 shipping. Sounds fair but I'm new to this machine/brand and i wanted a quick double check.

Is the price fair?

I still think and 18" is still too much for it, anything more than a 16" is too much!

It's not only the width of the bucket but the weight too that will effect its performance.

Is that a Kubota bucket or aftermarket. The 16” I bought with mine was $650 or so if I remember right

It's a new Kubota 18" BT2903 which is compatible with the BH77. I called the dealer for a price but hasn't gotten back with me yet. Local dealer doesn't give good deals :-(

I was wrong, I checked when I got home and the 16 was $750. My dealer doesn’t give good deals either.

Tough call. The total cost of the internet purchased 18" bucket is $550 and the total cost of the local dealer purchased 16" bucket is $750 (estimate based on Fordtech's purchase as my Kubota salesman hasn't bothered calling back). The 16" will 'probably' will fir that small hoe better than the 18"

Good to buy local but just the fact that the salesman has not returned my call for a price kind of negates that warm fuzzy feeling from buying local

EDIT: Just called a dealer in another city and he said tax title and license for a 16" is $700 and said they don't make an 18" which REALLY confused me since I see a lot of 18" buckets for sale that say they are Kubota and fit the BH77. I'm going to buy the $700 bucket from the farther away dealer who gave me pricing and not buy from the 'local' salesman who said he would call back and didn't.

So it doesn't look like Kubota makes a 18" bucket.

I know this an old thread, but I was curious if people have had success with other bucket brand/manufactures, such as Titan attachments. Or if anyone would know the bucket pin dimensions and specs to check compatiblity with the bh77 setup.

And BXpanded sells a 4 1/2" and 6" trencher bucket that fits the BH77....and the ripper. I have the 6" bucket from them.

I like it, but have not had much of a chance to use it.

I have only used it once digging up my broken septic line. It is good for when you really don't want to dig such a wide hole. I also plan on installing some 4 inch drain pipe at some time when we actually have a dry summer here and had that in mind when I bought it.

It will pack up tight with soil if it is damp or wet though, and I had to pry the packed soil out of it periodically.

So, yeah, I think it is a good size bucket to have as a smaller option. I like their ripper too. I have used it more than anything.

I just got a L3901 and dealer charged me $650 for a 16” pin on bucket. Also said 16” was biggest he would recommend with the clay in SE Tennessee.
BTW the tractor and FEL came in early. The backhoe is another matter. Sales guy said to plan on January ‘22 for worse case. Was going to sell my B2601 right but it has a BH on it. So I guess I just wait.

I just dug 150 feet of 4 foot deep trench using 16 inch bucket on bh77, l3301.

Including moving dirt from the trench into piles, it took all day (9-6 with a break in between). When you hit clay, it slows down and struggles a bit, but gets the job done.

I have 6 inch bxpanded bucket and don’t really like it honestly.

- Clay compacts inside and wont come out shaking bucket (got feeling this will be problem in 12 inch too)…not a problem with 16 inches
- For water lines, code calls for 12 inch plus pipe diameter trench (16 lets you run up to 4 inch pipe)…you can run electrical in 4 inch trench though
- If you got thumb, the trench bucket is too narrow so as you dig, the pins and thumb rub
- With 16 inch trench you can get inside and use shove to clean…cant in 4-6 inches
- If you hit rock, a tiny trench is too small to get it out

16 inches is about as small as I’d want and would prefer 24 inches. It’s an option, but I’m kinda doubting the backhoe would handle it well. Once I upgrade to L47, I’ll be going with 18 or 24 bucket.

same price in Canada. I checked last week but kicker was delivery would be November 2022. I declined.
