Is a 7’ box blade too big for an L3901?

Well - it will really depend on the bite you wish to take! If pushing around gravel - might be fine - if digging dirt and moving a large chunk of dirt - then you might be loosing traction.

You 3 point should lift it ok - unless it weighs more than about 1800 lbs!

Mostly for gravel. I have no idea how much it weighs.

I have an L3901. I think a 6' blade would be Ok for it, considering that you may have to dig deep. 6' would cover the tire marks.

Might be a tad too wide but not too heavy

I run a 6 footer on 28 hp; I could stop the tractor in it's tracks but I can also feather it so it fills up and I can move the dirt places. You really can't have it too heavy, the width (even though I joked about it above) is something to think about.

A 7' box blade by itself is not too heavy. Actually, a heavier box blade works better for many things. I have used a 6' on my L2501, but not extensively. I never loaded it up with soil though, but did put all the rippers down and it struggled to pull in some super hard packed material. You would probably be fine with it for gravel. You can always adjust it so it does not load up completely with gravel, or just lift the box blade to empty some of it if you need to.

I own a 7’ box blade and an L3901, I would never consider putting the 7’ on the L3901, I use the 7’ behind my MX 5800.
I have a heavy duty 5’ that I use with my L series in the woodland, it works well and allows me to move and cut a lot of dirt. If you are only moving gravel, you may find that a 6’ is a good choice on the back of your L3901.
in my opinion 7’ is just too big on the back of an L series, yes it will lift it but it seems a little unwieldy.

I agree the I have a 5' box behind my 3901 and it is about perfect for the weight of the tractor with loaded R4 tires. A 7' will load up too much material and the wheels will begin to spin. This will mean more passes and frustration.

Not too heavy.
The L3901 has more than enough power to pull it. The tractor weight and traction is not enough, will likely spin out at low depths.

I’m a L3901 owner and run it with a heavy duty 5’ box blade, it performs very well. If I was only doing gravel driveway I would either buy a 66” or 72”, I suggest you buy a heavy unit, they should be at least around 500 lbs for this size.

Id be tempted to go 66” just to avoid it becoming cumbersome.

If the driveway width is 12', then 2 passes with a 6' grader.​
