This is my first time welding. The weld is not pretty and probably not as strong as it should be. But there's a first time for everything.

Next project will be DIY clamp-on bucket forks.

Good job. Welds look fine.

I would weld some flat bar across the top. Lots of sharp edges there....my shirt or skin would find those real fast!

You're absolutely right. I thought about it but I had no more metal on hand. And now it's painted... It's not something I reach for a lot anyway. At the end of the day, if I cut my arm on the grill but did not crush my foot with the backhoe, I guess it's a good day 😁

Looks really good. Can I ask why you welded the mesh on the back side and not the front?
I thought it would look nicer on the back. Plus, putting it on the back hides the weld.

Looks good, just get a small diameter fuel line and split it lengthwise and put it over the wire ends and job done.👍

I went with the back on mine and added a little beef at the same time.

I installed the mesh in angle irons and then bolted them to the guard. I did this so if something happens to the mesh, I can just unbolt them and make new ones without having to grind down all the welds to get the mesh off.

The welds look a little cold but you did great for a first attempt.

This is probably the direction I intend to go i.e. mesh welded to angle that bolts to the factory guard. A member here makes very nice grill guards but like many here I'm going to make my own.

I bought a pair of clamp on bucket forks for less than $100 shipped to my house. As little as I need pallet forks I think they will work fine. 1500 lb. capacity
