I remember when a gas engine car tune up only required a;
9/16 dist wrench.
Feeler gauge for the points and plugs.
A tach and dwell meter to adjust the idle rpm setting and points operation.
A timing light to set the timing.

Feel free to add anything I forgot
I still have these in my "tool box of meters"

I bought a "new to me" tractor last September and backtracked to a 2005 M4900, to avoid getting a common rail engine. I bought a new MS362 Stihl chainsaw last year and did not get the CM.

I am trying to keep my life simple and avoid being dependent upon a dealer's computer when I need service.

Don't forget that it had to be done every spring and fall, and maybe a points adjustment in between just for good measure.

And if you were going out on Friday or Saturday nights when you changed plugs you made sure you indexed them, and flipped the lid over on the air cleaner and yep some place there is a light and a dwell meter, and parts to a Malory rev pull distributor,, just more junk for the kids to toss one day :)

My first car (77 Corolla) had points which literally broke in two one time, stranding me on the highway, and I was out of town. Of course, no cell phones then. I had to cut some speaker wire and wired the points back together. It got me home.

I also remember giving the carburetor a good squirt of carb cleaner from time to time.

I remember when phones had dials on them and the handle was connected by a cord.
I remember when you had to listen to the rings to make sure the call was for your house (party line at my grandparents).
I remember when there was enough room that I could stand inside the engine compartment of the F150 to work on it (before they added all the pollution control).
I remember when you had a choice between regular and unleaded gas.
I remember when the car came with a full size spare and a bumper jack.

Gotta make that motor sound like a vacuum cleaner when you mash the loud pedal to impress your girlfriend.....

Today, you need to be a computer programmer to 'tune' a motor.

I am so, so glad all my diesels are conventional injection. Even my unit injected pickup truck is better than the common rail crap and all the hardware associated with it.

My wife's Suburban does (full size spare and jack. Problem is, GM, in their wise ass attitude make the spare tire hoist cable about 3" too short so the only way to get the full size spare (heavy as hell) tire off the hoist cable is get underneath the vehicle and angle the tire and rim up on your shoulder so you can remove the hoist retainer.

Nice design. Just the ticket for some gal on the side of the road with a flat. Everything is there but not useable.

GM should have went tits up instead of getting bailed out by Obozo.

I will say, far as my vehicles (gas engined ones) are concerned, a good quality OBD scan tool is quicker and easier than timing lights, dwell meters and all that stuff. Plug into the OBD port and get all the data instantly and a good (expensive) scan tool will also tell you what needs to be replaced. You really don't need to be a computer whiz either. Someone else did the 'dirty work' for you. You 'pays the price' and 'gets the knowledge in the tool'.

I remember when people wouldn't bat an eye if you were riding in the bed of a pickup going down the highway.
And, when you didn't need a drivers license to haul a load of grain to the elevator.

All that still applies around here. If you are big enough to see over the steering wheel and reach the pedals you are big enough to deliver grain to the co-op. Far as riding in the back of a pickup, they do that too but it is illegal,

I remember riding on the tailgate of our pickup for miles and miles. Had to hold your feet up if going through a sharp dip.

And riding in the rear facing seat of the station wagon with legs and feet right in front of the bumper.

We never considered how dangerous either of those were.

$5 per load for all 8. One of the damn fools found a piece of rope and was flying a folded up lawn chair out the back like a kite on the way home. I could have killed him.

Drive-in’s and pick up trucks.....

Young gals and drive-in’s.....God, was it great to grow up in the era of Drive-In’s......:cool::cool:

I would load my truck with a bunch of buddies, lawn chairs and beer for the XXX double-feature. No truck load special, so my buds would jump out outside, then sneak in. I would drive in alone with a whole bunch of beer and chairs.....Person at the ticket booth would just smile.....:)

I remember spending Saturday nights racing from stop light to stop light on "the Ave". After the cops showed up and dispersed or ticketed the racers, we would spend the remainder of the night "cruising for chicks" and buying beer from taverns that would sell it to anyone that "forgot their ID" for $2.00 per 6 pack. The 6 pack would cost only $1.25 if you had ID that said you were 21.
