Hello everyone

Recently acquired my first Kubota, and first Desiel tractor. I'm no stranger to working on cars or gas tractors, but have no experience with Kubota or Desiel engines.

My tractor is an '86 B7200E, 2wd, 8 speed manual transmission. The tractor use to belong to my grandfather, and was well upkept. Hours are right around 1,400 and it hardly shows it.

It has a 60" mid mount mower deck, driven by a front PTO and engages with the handle mounted on the left side of the dash.

This tractor has never had a loader on it, and occasionally had a york rake on it.

I'm going through the whole thing, cleaning it and getting it ready to mow. Had to replace a couple belts and new blades, but nothing I'm not use to doing.

My biggest questions are the following:

1. What kind of fuel additive do you use? I typically use a stabilizer and fuel system cleaner in all my fuel I put in my gas mowers and snow-blowers.

2. What should I run the Kubota motor at (RPMs). I have a guage that looks like it has a PTO mark at 2,400. I assume this is where the PTO output matches the speed it should run at (this tractor also has the 2-speed PTO selector).

The tag on the tractor says it has a D950 3-cylinder, and says "max speed: 2,700 rpm".

My dad has had Kubotas for years, and he said to run it around the 2,500 mark. He did show me how to run this and about the glo plugs and all that.

Any advice or recommendations would be much appreciated.

Do not store a lot of fuel.

Buy your fuel at a big truck stop to ensure you get a blend designed for the current season. Do not try and run summer blend in the winter as the worst case example.

Do the above and you wont need. to play chemist with additives.

You cannot over speed the engine. The injection pump is governed

For grass cutting it is designed to be run at the pto rpm.

Only use the high speed pto on implements designed for it which, in North America, are few to none.

Like Dave said above.

Gasoline, which now includes ethanol, rapidly destabilizes, and ethanol attracts and holds water. Therefore the rise of a whole industry to sell additives to make gasoline behave as it used to.

Diesel is basically a light fuel oil. Unless water gets into diesel, it remains stable. Water allows critters to grow, which can plug and block fuel flow. Try to keep a full tank to prevent moisture condensation. If you get critters, then a biocide will take care of the situation. Normally it should not be needed.

If you don't already have an Operator's Manual, and Workshop Manual (WSM), you'll be needing those.

Thanks all for the replies. I attached a couple of pictures.

I'm probably not going to be running anything other than a mower, and possibly a grader blade on the 3-point.

I do have a workshop manual (I think that's what it is), but I'm not sure I have the original owner's manual. I did see some repros on ebay that I was thinking about picking up.

I also am not planning on running it in the winter. I have a short driveway and running the Kubota would probably be a little overkill. Plus, I have a blast plowing with my little 8hp Wheel Horse lol.

If the tractor is going to sit, don't forget to use a block of wood to keep the clutch depressed so the disk does not rust solid to the flywheel.

Likely there will be a comment to that effect in the Owner's manual.

if you buy your diesel in the winter then you can use it year round.

A set of rear tire chains and you could pull many stuck vehicles out of the snow.

Great looking tractor!

Definitely one of the nicer 7200s I've seen in awhile. They are great units. Take care of it and it'll last you another 40 years.

Do not run it out of fuel, (common practice with storing a gasoline engine for a length of time), you can not run a diesel out of fuel and store it.

If your going to store it over the winter you will need to treat the fuel with a good biocide / algaecide.

As others have said you don't need to treat it during the use period as long as you you good clean fuel.
The fuller you keep the tank during storage the better you will be.

Thanks again for the kind words.

What kind of implements would use the higher PTO Speed? I think my grandfather use to have a PTO driven "trac vac" leaf collection trailer. would that be run on the higher speed? Or maybe something like a sweeper?
