So the PTO shaft hook on the RCR1860 has broken on me twice. See the pictures. I'm putting another on because I hate leaving the shaft U-joint at the other end on the ground when its not hooked up to the tractor. I'm wondering if I might be tightening it too much so when it hit something it shears off because it cannot move.

I notice that there is a bushing that fits around the threaded portion of the shaft that conveniently fits inside the black mount. This leads me to believe that perhaps this bushing was tightened too much and froze up and did not allow the hook to spin freely from side to side when I have the cutter shaft hooked up to the tractor's PTO. Perhaps aided with a little grease or fluid film the shaft would move and not break.

Does this make sense? Does anyone know if the hook is supposed to move side to side?

Has that thing been repaired at some point? I have the same cutter and it doesn’t look like that. Ill get a picture when I get home.

My Landpride chopper has the shaft caddy mounted to the upright not the upper link. Never seen one like that. On my batwing, I just lay the shaft on the deck.

I am thinking that you need to flip the hook toward the rear of the mower. That way when the top link is installed the hook is up and away from touching anything. That hook is for storage only it should not be around the PTO shaft when the mower is attached and ready to mow. May be send a picture with the mower hooked to the tractor to make sure you have everything hooked up correctly.

My shredder (different brand) has a floating link similar to the original poster’s link. The part with two holes should go to the front of the mower and attach to the top link to allow the mower to float on just the two lower arms and the rear wheel. That would make the hook to the rear of the mower and away from the pto shaft.

I don’t understand what he said about how it is breaking but it is a cool idea. I just use a rubber bungee to hold mine up when not using it.

Obviously they changed the set up on the RCR1860 at some time. Mine is circa 2012. How about yours? Yours definitely looks more sturdy.

What happens is that the black U-shape that the hook is attached to pivots 180 degrees when you hook the top link to one of the two holes at the other end.

Interesting...

The one on my 96" wide Landpride is just like the picture on the little one and mine ios spring loaded so when you take the pto shaft out of the hook caddy, it springs to the side out of the way. Very convenient.

The RCR1860 is available with either top link set up. Fordtech's has the optional floating link on it. Both styles float, just differently.
Your hook should rotate in a circle by hand if the tension on the lock nuts is set correctly, and is just there to hang the driveshaft on when the mower is not in use.
It pivots towards the back, out of the way of the driveshaft when you hook up the top link.

I use the bungee cord method on my 2018 60” finish mower, it was brand new, no hook or anything else. If you folks are getting oil on the side of your gear box check out my post from today on land pride 3 pt mowers.
