You ought to shoot my 460 Smith XVR sometime with a 300 grain .452 Swift A frame with a charge of Lil Gun behind it. It's a humbling experience. I've shot wild hogs and whitetails with it at 100 yards or better. Usually one shot. Makes a 44 RM seem tame.

Never fired one, but I would think that 460 recoil would be pretty sharp compared to the (relatively) slow push of the 45-70. Both have got to be brutal.

No thanks. My hands just cannot take the abuse anymore. Had a young guy next to me at the range shooting his 50 cal SW and taking a beating. Just shook my head.

In reality, the recoil on my Model 29 Smith 44RM is way more abrupt and sharp and the muzzle climb is way more pronounced than my 460 wheelgun. The 460 is an X frame (much heavier frame) than the 29 and the 460 has a built in, but removable muzzle brake so the recoil is much tamer and there is no muzzle climb at all. In fact you can shoot it one handed (if you are game....:D).

The 460 weighs as much as some of my hunting rifles (8 pounds loaded). It's actually a hoot to shoot but necessitates substantial hearing protection. I wear Walkers Game Ears when hunting with it. The report is wicked and the factory ammo is expensive so I roll my own.

I owned a Barrett 50 a few years back and sold it. Even handloading for a 50 cal is expensive. Nice stick but very heavy. Mine had the BORS sighting system on it. Very accurate out to 1000 yards but just not practical.

I actually prefer the 460 over the 44 just because of the recoil factor plus the 460 XVR is accurate to 150 yards. The 44RM is iffy at 100 yards and really not capable of as clean kill much past that. The 460 with it's extreme (for a handgun) muzzle velocity is well capable of a clean kill past 150 in reality.

Both my 44 and my 460 are scoped. Problem with the 44, because if the abrupt recoil is, it can eat a cheap scope. I have to run a high end optic on it (Swarovski) where as the 460 isn't a scope eater. I run an older Japanese Burris (LOE glass) 2-6 handgun scope on the 460 in Bruce Talley rings. No issues in a few years with scope failure.

When I head into the woods I always carry the "Judge" with me. It is a 45 snub that takes 45 Colt (or called Long, or Long Colt depending on where you are from) as well as 3" .410 rounds.

Gives you a lot of options. Not real accurate past 10 yards but it puts a big hole in anything inside 10 yards.

Just like a bow or rifle, it's not the size it's the person that's squeezing the trigger that makes the difference. No need to punish yourself, practice, practice and more practice and their all deadly.;)

LOL, that looked even worse than the 44 shorty I had. Way too much gun and not enough barrel. One day my farrier and I were talking about guns and I told him I was thinking of getting rid of that particular gun, Smith and Wesson so a quality piece. He was looking for a carry gun while elk hunting for some reason so I brought it out and he bought it, gave me back the money I just gave him plus a bit more, lol. Next time I saw him he said "Man that thing really barks".

Way back in the when I was much younger and had more bal,,,,er courage than I do now, I traded to an old abused 29, that had been in a flood and was soild but looked like crap. the font 2 inches or so of the bore looked like an old hunk of water pipe. I know a gunsmith and asked about a barrel job. He said he had just the thing. Lord knows where he came up with a S&W 3 incher, well heck yeah screw it in there! The price was right and ,, and now that I think about it he did have a twisted smile when he finished the job. 5 rounds of full house .44's out of it ,,and after that the only thing it was loaded with was 44 specials. I think I traded it off for a Glock later, which I gave away, or lost or something

Not living all that far from me, when the Wuhan Flu thing is overwith, you are welcome to stop by and I'll let you discharge a number of big bore handguns and long guns. I have a 300 yard range out back. Think you need to experience a 460 and a long barrel 44 and maybe a 338 Lapua Magnum. Got a 44 derringer too.

338, oh the memories. I was going elk hunting and a guy I knew said my 308 was too small and insisted I take his .338. Being younger and not knowing that much about large caliber rifles I innocently borrowed it. Bruised shoulder just sighting it in so I was a bit relieved I didn't see any elk that season. Tried to give it back to him but he wanted me to buy it!!! What!!! No way, that thing hurt just looking at it. It was nearing Christmas and he said he wanted to get his daughter a bicycle and was short of cash and said $150 bucks was all he wanted. As a favor and since it was such a good price I relented and bought the darn thing. It stayed in the gun safe for a few years then one day a friend drew a moose tag and was talking about getting a bigger gun. Eureka, have I got a deal for you, sold it to him and we both were very happy, lol.

Lol, you're at it early my friend. I think within a hundred yards a 30-30 would kill an elephant, well that's with the right shooter as always.

When I was a tot, I watched a 30-40 Krag drop a large, (300+lb) pissed off black bear with one well placed shot. Same gun took a moose the next year with one shot.
