Can anyone recommend a brand/model of log splitter that would work well on the back of my 15 HP B6200 with 12.5 HP PTO?
Thanks. Peter

i think, my opinion mind you, you would be much happier pulling a splitter with your tractor that had its own powerplant. (separate engine) all said and done you'd be better off with the oil flow and speed of operation.

I agree with KyTim. My neighbor spent $1800 for a new 3pt splitter with auxilary pto pump for an M70 Kubota. I just spent $925 for an almost new 28 ton Speeco towable (up to 55mph) with I/C 1450cc engine.
You'll get more work for your dollar with a self-powered splitter and your B will be happier pulling it around.

I agree with the other guys. A friend of my Dad had a three point mounted spitter that ran off the tractors hydraulics, I got roped into helping split wood while I was home on leave. Can you say slow? You could time the cycle with a sundial.

Even with a PTO driven pump, you are putting a lot of wear and tear on your tractor.

If you buy a new splitter, get one that pivots so the ram is verticle; much easier to move the wood on the ground rather than having to lift each piece.

I must agree with the others. I am in the market for a splitter as well and you definitely get more bang for your buck purchasing a seperate unit. Also if you have a helper, you can continue to use the tractor dragging / moving logs while your helper splits wood. If the splitter is attached, your tractor is in use and not available for other tasks if necessary. Just my 2 cents.

It really depends how you want to use it. Do you want to take the spliltter to the wood, or drag the wood to the splitter?

Just for the sake of argument, I think a splitter running a PTO pump could work very well. I have a PTO pump running my backhoe, and the tractor engine just hums along, never bogs in the slightest even when the relief squeals on the backhoe hydraulics. Yes, it's hours on the meter, but for the most part it's under very little load.

I plan on building a PTO pump driven splitter for mine one of these days if I don't find a PTO screw type first. I missed one of those on Craig's List a few months ago and I'm still pissed about it.

You're right to an extent, but you can use your tractor to tow your independantly driven 27 ton horizontal/vertical splitter to the wood, unhitch it and start splitting. Meanwhile you have the tractor avialable to move logs around or to do whatever you want with it. You don't have tractor if its tied up as the splitters prime mover. Unless you're doing extensive off roading with your tractor, the tow behind splitter is going to go just about everwhere that the tractor is going to go, within reason. If you ever get to use a horizontal/vertical splitter in the vertical position, then you will never go back to the horizontal. Add to the above points the fact the the three-point splitters are a lot more expensive and it just isn't making sense in my mind.

Thanks to all for your very helpful feedback. In summary, the majority view is that it's best to go with an independently powered log splitter. Peter

I have one of them, factory made from the 70's. I had to design a screw for it, and had a machine shop make it for me.

I can make some detailed drawings one day if I can get some time.
I had just finished splitting all the downed trees from April's Tornados and woke up Tuesday to 6 more large Red and White Oaks that'll have to be drug out of the woods and cut and split.
Maybe I can remember to get some photos of it. The housing isn't complicated.

This is what I picked up today. Huskee 22 ton vertical / horizontal splitter with briggs and stratton engine. Tractor supply has them $100 off until Sept 25th. So it was 999.00. I have been on craigslist for over a month and have checked numerous locations and this seemed to be the best deal for me.

I read reviews for hours and watched a bunch of Youtube videos on it. Now you have .04 cents of mine.

The Unicorn-
I've used one before- I wouldn't be surprised if OSHA or some other agency doesn't outlaw them. They work great, unless it gets hung up. But, if the wood slips off of the arm, somebody will get hurt- that is one dangerous piece of equipment. Enjoy it, but please be careful!

I have a 5hp Super Split that works awesome. There are a couple of companies building similar machines now, much cheaper. These things are amazingly fast, powerful & can be towed anywhere with my B7100, ATV or lawn tractor. I also scored an original Bark Buster (from the guy that bought it new) recently for $100! I wanted one of these to keep at our cottage (where my tractors are & leave my Super Split at home). I've heard all the hoopla about killing myself but after using it on my B7100 & my Ford 8N, they are no more dangerous than other splitters. One like it was offered as an option for the B7100 back in '80, when my tractor was sold.
