One thing that confuses me, is why would there be a rated (2600) PTO RPM marker on the Tachometer, and a maximum (2900rpm) PTO RPM marker 300rpm higher? My machine revs just over 2700rpm maxed out.
Any ideas on that?
Does the L2501 have something similar?

No problem.
Mine doesn’t have the max and rated.
If I had your machine I would have no problem turning up the rpm to 2900 rpm.
It clearly says 2900 max so I would crank it up.
I am going to do some more research and if I find that the kubota d1703 max is 2800 I will crank it up.
2400 rpm is to low.

I do understand that two motors being identical are ran under the exact same load one run at 2400 rpm and one running at 2800 rpm the one running lower rpm will probably run longer but I don’t plan on running it 2800 rpm 100% of the time.
I will only run it at 2800 less than 10% of the time. And it may be useful to have the extra revs when I get myself in a bad situation.

Like when I set a field on fire. I could of used the extra revs then.

I'm guessing the "MAX" marker is what we used to call the "Red Line" for max engine RPM?

I know I tickled a few Red Lines on Rice-burner motorcycles.....::p:eek:

I thought so too maybe. But, why is it PTO related, with the PTO symbol? I wouldn't think the engines max RPM would have that symbol.

My kubota l2501 max rpm is 2,400 rpm. Which is very low and why I kept yanking on the throttle lever when I first got it.
The d1703 engine is rated to run between 1500-2800 rpm.
I am positive I can turn the engine up to 2,800 rpm without any negative The Kubota D1703 is a vertical, water-cooled, 4-cycle diesel engine with a capacity of 30HP at 2800RPM. effects on the engine.
Just because I turn it up to 2,800 rpm doesn***8217;t mean I am going to run it 100% of the time at 2,800.

The Kubota D1703 is a vertical, water-cooled, 4-cycle diesel engine with a capacity of 30HP at 2800RPM.

IF the engine is rated for 30 hp at 2800 rpm (and it doesn't say "rated" in this sentence, so that's why I bolded the IF) then your machine should be able to achieve this engine rpm under load and have a minimum output of 30hp. That's how engine ratings work. If, under no load conditions (i.e. high idle), you cannot achieve 2800 rpm you need to adjust the stop so you can.
here's some data I found on tractordata.com for the L2501.

I did some looking. http://www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/008/0/8/8085-kubota-l2501-engine.html This says the engine is rated at 24 HP @2200 rpm. If this is correct (another if) than it seem you are already above rated rpm at 2400.

Hmmm... looked at it again. Not sure if it's PTO or not.

I see what you're saying with the 2 PTO symbols...

My experience with JD are a Styled B circa 1940, and a 1996 425 Garden Tractor.

Your 870 is Asian or European, if my memory serves.... I'm honestly not sure what the heck they were trying to say with that indicator! :( I'm wondering if that was their attempt at a Red Line and it was confused in the "translation" or presentation on the dash?!?! I don't know - just guessing..

Like I said before, I know that some of Asian manufacturers knew how to put an honest "red line" on their motorcycles..

Rdrett, have you looked at the torque and HP chart for the engine? If I was looking at the right on, you will lose torque if you up the RPMs. And if I figured right, if you up the RPMs by 400, will will add just about 1 MPH in high gear.

2400 rpm with no load. Add a small load and it drops to 2200 rpm.

That's consistent with the info from tractordata.com. that's called speed droop and is meant to keep the engine within limits.

Where did the 30 hp come from?

It's built in Japan. It's technically a Yanmar, built for John Deere, by Yanmar.
The 3TN84 (when in the 870) has a governed/limited high idle RPM, of 2750-2800rpm, I'd think that would be where the "redline" would be, if it were marked, maybe(?). Looking back at the second PTO MAX marker, it actually appears to be 2950rpm, judging by the spacing of hashmarks.
It's confusing. Could it be the no load PTO rpm is MAX, and the loaded rpm is RATED?

I got it from the kubota d1703 Service manual.

ISO Net Continuous: (28.4 HP / 2800 min-1 (rpm)
SO/SAE Net Intermittent: (32.7 HP / 2800 min-1 (rpm)
SAE Gross Intermittent: (35.0 HP / 2800 min-1 (rpm)
Maximum Bare Speed: 3020 min-1 (rpm)
Minimum Bare Idling Speed: 750 to 850 min-1 (rpm)

Yes that is one way to state “per minute”

The Max pto your dash shows is just a limit on engine speed to limit the pto to some rpm. Rated would get 540, max would get something like 550 to 575 rpm

That is what I think anyway

Member by the name Joel K -has did the same as what you are wanting to do and he boosted hydraulic pressure too.Look at some of the older post.Just for the record I'm gonna do the same thing when warranty has expired.
