L3000 lost hyd pump prime after changing filter?

My neighbor asked me what to do to get hyd pump back to pumping after changing hyd filter. I told him only thing I could think of is with engine idling put short bursts of low pressure compressed air in hyd filler hole with opening blocked off with shop towel which hopefully would prime hyd pump.

I have read the correct procedure in either the owners manual, or the wsm. It's not hard, but not as you described. I also don't remember what it said.

Jim - do you think another model# WSM might have some tips/pointers for priming, as long as the era is similar? Maybe that aspect of the hydraulic system is similar?

I have no idea. I've only had personal experience with a M4900 & M7040. On those models just change hyd filters,check oil level start engine & hyd's operated properly.

Is it the internal screen? I have had the one in my l3000 out and cleaned it, I didn't need to prime the system, just refill the hydraulic oil and everything was normal. Any chance the screen was put back in backwards? That would block off the hydraulic flow.

Not sure you really need to do anything but when I had to repair my pump, I left the outlet hose off since it was on top, then filled the pump with hydraulic fluid through that opening. Then put the outlet pipe on and then started tractor and everything was good.

Normally just crack the outgoing line and that normally will allow it to prime.

Also check the suction side to make sure everything is tight.

I haven't had the need to try it, but read on another forum to put an air hose in the filler neck with rag to pressure oil to the pump.

Don't remember if it was my L3000 or one of my M9000's but one of them did the same thing. I was told to run it at low idle and work the steering back and forth slightly. It took about ten minutes but it started working.

Probably your M9. What I have to do with every fluid change. No big deal, fast idle for a few minutes and saw the steering wheel a bit.

I would be very hesitant doing that. Lots of seals in the case that could get compromised by pressurizing the case with compressed air.

Sometimes Internet folklore can get you in trouble.

Probably not relavent to this situation if it don’t have any hydraulic pressure,but I ripped the p/s return line off mine a couple weeks ago,got it back together and topped off this weekend,had no power steering but loader and 3pt still worked, I picked the front end off the ground with the loader and turned steering wheel side to side, did take a while for it to get back to normal

Always had to do the fast idle while turning the steering wheel trick back and forth on my M4900. It usually was back to normal within a minute or two.
