I finally used the last of my McCulloch 2 stroke oil for my ancient McCulloch chainsaw.
Any recommendations for a modern oil to mix with the gas? Ratio?
Thanks in advance.

Most those ol' saws used 40-1.....
the newer oils (synthetic stuff) allow you to use 50-1.

When my Stihl weedeater died a couple of years ago - I bought another, they gave me a 6 pack of their oil and said IF I used that, they would double my warranty!!1 (4 years)

this is it :

I second the stihl oil,the ultra stuff, comes in the grey bottle not the orange,I may be biased because all my saws, blowers, and weedeater is stihl but like Hokie says stihl gives u extra warranty for using their oil

I have used many a two stroke oil over the years, most recently Stihl, Amsoil Saber, and now Klotz 50:1. I have never had an oil related failure, so I think they all work pretty good.

The Klotz, though, has this super great smell when it burns. It smells so good, Klotz actually produced a scented candle that when lit smells just like their 50:1 oil!

I can't say the Klotz lubricates any better, but what a neat smell!

I would stick with the same ratio as u hav been using regardless if it the new synthetic oil,my dad had McCullouch saws and weed eaters growing up,I was young but I thought they were more like a 32:1 ratio, but definitely no more then 40:1

I suggest you consider using premixed fuel like Truefuel. Easy, clean, non ethanol but expensive

Comes in 40:1 and 50:1

I always stick with the Stihl recommended 50:1 in my saw, blower, and trimmer. Even when I was using the Amsoil Saber 100:1 product.

I never felt confident enough to run the Amsoil 100:1 in a Stihl machine that calls for 50:1. The Amsoil may be a great product, but I still ran it at 50:1 for peace of mind (and manufacturer recommendations!)

I had forgotten about Truefuel. I like the no ethanol part, I just might give it a try.
Because of my situation these days, I don't get to use the saw as much as I'd like, so the extra cost is no big deal, I won't need much.

Thanks for all your suggestions, I will definitely keep them in mind, and archive this thread for future reference.

Years ago I took me gen set to get worked on, because I was working out of town. Anyway when I picked it up the guy had a display of little packets hanging on the counter. It said 2 cycle oil one packed to one gallon and it didnt matter what the fuel to oil ratio was this worked. SO for shyts and giggles I bought a couple packs figured the old saw I had was a POS anyway if it blew up no loss. That saw never ran better. The oil was thin but it worked, and I havent seen anything like that since

A friend of mine runs a landscaping business in a large city. 7 figure plus annual gross, runs a LOT of 2-smoke equipment.

He recommends Opti-2 synthetic, won't use anything else in his gear. I tried it, and now use it in my weed whackers and chain saws.

An unexpected benefit is that I can (and regularly do) leave mixed gas in my equipment all winter and it starts right up in the spring.

Why don't you just buy non ethanol and blend your own? I haven't had to replace a carb on my small engines since I shifted to it. In fact the Obamaru is the only engine I run E85 in and it was designed for it. There's a joke in there somewhere but I'm to dense to figure it out.

Very hard to find Non- Ethanol gas around here because of getting all the emissions in the jet stream from the rest of the country.

I feel sorry for you guys WITHOUT the non-ethanol gas.

IN a 10 mile radius I can find at least 4 places that sell it......I burned about 200 gallons of the the 90 octane stuff this summer, cost was $2.90 a gallon! And I treat that too, just in case it sits for a while, specially over the winter!;)

In Canada the Shell premium 91 has no ethanol. I use it in everything and it stores for a long time.
As far as oil, I use Stihl oil in all my 2 strokes because it's easy (one small bottle, 1 gallon of gas for 50:1), I can get it local and it doubles new purchase warranties (a scam on Stihl's part to get you to buy oil but it does seem to be good stuff)

I use Amsoil Saber Pro in my saws and weedeaters. I use Amsoil Marine in my outboards. I mix both at 50:1. Oil for outboards is formulated differently because they are water cooled. Air cooled motors tend to run hotter and have different needs.

I used to use Amsoil 100:1 at 100:1 in the outboards, the theory being that you get a bit more power. And the old Scott Atwater outboards used to use their 100:1 oil. I switched to mixing it at 50:1 when it was pointed out to me that the old motors used a serpentine seal between cylinders that relied on the oil viscosity to seal the primary compression in the crankcases. They do seem to idle better at 50:1.

My employer has switched from mixing our own to the pre-mix fuel. Advantages are that the fuel is inherently stablized and there's no way to accidentally get the ratio wrong. They feel it is worth the increased cost. I figure the premix is close to 10x the price of mixing my own, but they figure it's cheap insurance, reducing the cost of maintenance and repair. If you only use the saw occasionally, the cost issue is probably not an issue.

The difference in lubrication between a modern 2-stroke oil at 50:1 and an older 2 stroke oil at 40:1 (or even 30w motor oil at 20:1 that was the diet of old 2 strokes before 2 stroke oils were developed) is negligible. However, the mixture has to be correctly adjusted to whatever blend you are using. Less oil in the fuel has the effect of fattening the mixture, so you may have to lean out the carb a bit if you switch to 50:1 or a pre-mix fuel.

For what it is worth, I have a 1990 Shindaiwa 250 and a 5 yr old Stihl weed eaters. Also have a 036 and 026 Stihl saw and a Husky varying in ages from 2000 to about 2010.

I use Shindaiwa mix in them all along with the Echo back back blower and all continue to run flawless.

From day one back in 1990 to date the only mix is they have had in them is the Shindaiwa.

It has worked great for me for 28 years.

In NH head up to Snowmobile Country to find Non-E fuel. It's there trust me.

We've been using Amsoil 100-1 for over 10 years. Using nothing but non-ethanol for probably 5 years. Outboards, mowers, weedeaters, aqua scooters, chain saw and a hedge trimmer. Never a problem.
