Sheepfarmer asked about using a trailer for a purpose other than it's manufactured purpose. So to keep from derailing that thread I'll start this one.

About 1 1/2 years ago I found an L3250 tractor for sale about 360 miles South of me near Payne, Ok. I contacted the seller and after visiting agreed on a price.

I asked the man if he would go out and lay a 2x4 on the outside of each rear tire and measure the distance between the 2x4"s. Would he also measure the height of the exhaust, and send me a picture of the exhaust.

He was extremely puzzled as why I made those request. I explained the trailer I wanted to haul it IN. He thought it was comical because he managed a horse breeding farm and I was coming to pick up a tractor in a stock trailer.

Worked out fine. I had about 2" on each side. I removed a clamp on the exhaust pipe and removed the muffler for head room. He had one of the guys at the ranch drive it in the trailer. I don't think I could have gotten out if I did it.

In this picture you can see the tractor setting in the trailer when I got home. I put a couple of pieces of 6x6 in the front so the tires could be pushed up against them. Used a 2" nylon tie strap on pull the tractor forward to the 6x6. Had my ramps pushed up against the rear tires, and held by a tie strap.

Thumbs up. Used my stock trailor for a few odd jobs also. You never know when those darn tractors will start acting up and try to jump out [emoji4]

Now then I have to say you got me. I even looked on the map. Where in heck is Payne OK.

I can not say I know every town in Oklahoma but usually I have a clue.

County. Got it. Town I am totally lost.

Maybe the pontoons are filled with helium? For a minute there I thought that was a roller skate under the hitch...

D2 if I figure it out I'll take a picture! Glad I'm not the only one to use horse/stock trailers differently. When I used to move from one part of the country to the other, the horse went in the left half of the trailer and large stuff like my bicycle, ironing board, large boxes, and once even a loom went in the right.

I currently use my bought new last year 12' dump bed 10,000 GVW trailer to haul my L3301. Since I also recently bought a Kubota U25 mini excavator, I assumed I'd use the same trailer for it. Turns out it may not be the best choice, it'd work but the sideboards really get in the way of where the tie downs should be, and the ramp/bed height is kinda high, plus the entire dumping mechanism adds empty weight.

So now I am in the planning process (after pricing out factory built tilt bed trailers) of making one myself that will be optimized for carrying the mini and the tractor (one at a time). NO deck, just an open frame, and NO sideboards. I live on a mountainside and keeping the empty weight down is beneficial, plus it saves money. I have a small single axle trailer I built years ago to haul my old much small 'bota, and still use today for various things, and I find the open frame/no continuous deck thing super handy, as I can tie down odd loads about anywhere, plus it's light as possible. One great thing about building it myself, is I can do it exactly how I want it, while saving major bucks.
