Hi All ,
I have just purchased a new BX2680 with FEL, drive over deck, front mount snow blower and rear tiller. The front end will have the new K-Connect mount for the snow blower and any other Kubota attachment.
Im looking at making a hydraulic wood splitter. I Do Not want to run it off the tractor hydraulics, not enough flow, I think just a bit more then 6gpm at 2000 rpm motor speed.
I have other tractors, and run a rear PTO hyd. pump and they work ok, but you still need to get the PTO spinning at 540 to get any kind of decent flow, unless of course you have a monster sized pump....
Im thinkin of using the mid PTO.... Spins at roughly the same speed as the engine, so one could run a hyd pump at much faster rpm, say 1200, with the motor rpm roughly the same.. The BX 2680 has more then enough power to drive a 15 - 20 gpm pump at 2500 psi... So why not use the mid mount PTO>>>
Any thoughts on this would be great. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to ALL!!

The formula for hydraulic horsepower is usgpm x psi divided by 1714. so, yes , a BX 2680 could maybe pull it off at full rpm! I think it is a good idea to run a pump off the mid pto ( it is about 2000 rpm by the way) but do you really need 15 gpm?

I don't need 15 gpm, just padded it a bit. A good 10 gpm at 2500 psi would require about 15 hp. Im not sure of the hp-rmp curve for the bx2680, but my whole idea is being able to run the tractor at a lower rmp to maintain a good flow to run a wood splitter. At 10 gpm and using a 4" x 18" ram it would strke in aprox 6 sec that would be great. And at 2500 psi would push 15 ton. For firewood I think that would be ample????

Yup! looks like your math is right! PTO pumps are readily available though and you would have to build a drive for the mid drive pto, I wonder which would be more practical and less expensive?

Just for information, your hydraulic pump now is capable of 6.2 USGM at 3200 rpm but 2.1 USGM is taken off for the steering. (and HST charge plus PTO clutch)

Ya the 6.2 gpm would maybe be enough, but then the motor is reved right up. I think I would only need the HP that 1200 - 1500 RPM would make.. saving on fuel and wear on the motor and keeping the noise level down

I have the K-Connect front set up, and was thinkin of trying to match up the coupling half, or just ordering another half through Kuboda, and fabbing up a mount to go onto the K-connect. That way I could build a front mount for the splitter.
It would be nice to make it a complete front mount assembly...??

The Kubota mid pto shaft is .969 ten spline. It just happens to be the same as old International cub tractor rear PTO shafts! If you go to Kubota to buy that coupler or shaft you might need a second mortgage on your home to pay for it! But there are a lot of adapters available for the International Cub! http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/Farmall-Cub_PTO-Adapter_PA13.html

What holds that adapter onto the output shaft? For that matter, what holds the driveshaft to that adapter?
That particular one requires a roll-pin through it on the international. there are different couplings that have a variety of attachment technologies. I built a new drive shaft for a F2100 I used to have using components from Hub City, a manufacturer of a wide range of driveshaft components. they have an on-line catalog. http://www.hubcityinc.com/

Now you are coupled to a PTO that will turn up to 2000 rpm. And on the frame is your wood splitter. Or if you prefer a 3 point mounted one the just run a couple hyd hoses back. Or ???

I considered running a log splitter off my mid PTO. After carefully figuring cost of parts and materials needed and time to fab it, I spent $1000 on a 28 ton vertical or horizontal splitter powered by a 10.5hp B&S commercial motor. I tow it with my tractor and sometimes use the loader to lift or move big logs. And I have never had second thoughts about not using the mid PTO for this.
