front differential repair on m125

Hi folks, just signed up this evening. I have an M125 with stripped splines on the front differential pinion gear that joins to the front propeller shaft. Got the new parts and removed the front axel from the tractor. Got the bolts out of the pinion bearing case, however the pinion bearing case does not come out. Looking at the parts manual it has an attached bracket that the front axle shafts and beveled gears run through? My question is, what steps need to be taken to remove the pinion bearing case so that I can change the pionion gear and bearings etc. Thanks in advance.

remove both left and right final drives where they attach to the center housing then remove the axles. the (pumpkin) will then come out. you will have to remove the crown gear and carrier because the pinion is installed from the inside. kind of a big job but really pretty straight forward. keep track of all the shims!! I usually remove the final drives before I remove the axle.

Generally, axles run into the carrier, and the pinion and carrier are as one, have you removed the axles?
EDIT: Beaten by a whisker!

Thanks for the quick reply. I have not removed the axles. I didn't realize the pinion and the carrier were as one, like you said. Good advice removing the final drives before the axle. Any trick to removing the axles? I got the final drives off now. One bolt and slide right out now?
....definitely right about it being a "big job". Didn't realize "how big" till I got it all apart, but I guess we are into it now. Thanks again for both replys. Very much appreciated.

With the final drives off the axles should just slide out after you remove the gear and snap-ring behind it.

I just remembered ( been a couple years since I've had one appart) you need to remove the steering cylinder because there are two bolts behind it holding that assembly in there! The steering cylinder can be quite difficult to get off the dowels!

OK, that's what was holding me up was that gear and the snap ring have to come off. I'll know where to come if I run into any more problems. Thanks again! Greatly appreciated.

Make sure you flush the inside of the axle and all the pieces good to remove any pieces of metal from the stripped splines. If you don’t you could have problems down the road.

Just wondering how many hours are on your M125. I have been removing and checking the couplings on all the M series tractors I take care of. I am replacing the splined couplers at 2 to 3000 hours on some of them.
