On my 2004 model L2800 non HST I was moving some broken up asphalt the other day and evidently a piece flew up and hit the long rod on the transmission shaft going back to the rear end and bent it.

I thought that I had a clutch going bad because it would only pull normal in 1st gear low. In higher gears it would barely pull up a hill. The clutch pedal had NO play in it which from what I have heard it should have between 3/4 and 1" of play.

I pulled the long rod off and straightened it back out but when I put it back on I still had no play in the pedal. I then adjusted the short rod and now I have the required play in the pedal but when I push in the clutch pedal the long rod does not move.

Here are my questions and concerns:

  1. [/
  2. Would the bent rod cause the issue I am describing with the higher gears?
  3. If it wouldn't then am I looking at a new clutch?
  4. When I depress the clutch pedal the short rod moves but the long rod doesn't. Is it supposed to or is there something else that make that long rod move?
  5. How do I know when the long rod is adjusted correctly?

    Thanks!

Pictures are worth a thousand words.
If the "long rod" goes to the back it's the brake rod, not the clutch.

It's sounding like you have a fried clutch.
