2201 pto rpm

recent purchase of an L2201. The PTO appears to have a Hi/Lo plus 4 gears/speeds. How do I determine the RPMs for each gear? I have purchased a new bush hog and need to know which PTO gear to use for mowing and not exceed recommended RPM of mower. Tks. I tried to search the forum for this question, but it didn't seem to be working.

You want the 540 PTO RPM for the brush hog. It will turn noticeably slower, DO NOT use the higher range! Then just set the engine RPM to the mark indicated on the tach, my 3301 and 2105 both have marks on the tach, when the engine is at that RPM, the PTO will be spinning at 540. I usually run a bit below, it's quieter and still gets the job done without lugging the engine.

What gear or speed range you are in has no effect on the PTO speed, that is only determined by the engine RPM and the PTO range selector.

if I understand correctly, as long as the PTO is in lo range, the gear does not matter, just use the tractor rpm for the speed

Are you sure you don't have the PTO mixed up with the transmission for the wheels? According to tractordata.com, it has 8 forward and 2 reverse and a 3 speed PTO. Tractordata has been wrong before, but I can't see them having a high low and 4 speeds for a total of 8 speeds for the PTO. Look for a lever that has 3 speeds listed. 1st gear will be 540 at the rpm marked as PTO speed on the engine tach.

So on that model 540 RPM would most likely be be low range.

If all else fails get a RPM meter.

tks wolf...all the numbers had me confused since I haven't had a need to use the PTO yet...so what you are saying is the upper left shifter only purpose is to put the PTO in/out of gear while the lower left puts the PTO in either Hi/Lo range or neutral. And obviously the right shifter is for the tractor transmission...I really appreciate your help....and I just ordered the RPM meter

I actually misstated the levers in the last post.

It's top right lever is PTO gear range 1-4 (H pattern listed below it) for PTO speed select
Top right Gear range R-1-4 and R2-5-8 (Pattern listed below it), for movement speed select
Lower right lever is transmission gear range H-N-L (pattern to the right of it) for movement range select

And to clarify some statements more fully
PTO has 4 speeds
Engine speed has to be set to some RPM to achieve the speed set by the selection of PTO gear

On my tractor and I assume yours there is a mark on the tachometer labeled PTO

On my tractor put PTO selector in #1, set throttle to achieve rpm and pto rotates at 540 RPM

Then select gear for transmission to achieve the appropriate ground speed

To add a little more clarification. The hi/low shifter on top of the transmission is actually for creeper gears. Travel speed can be measured in feet per hour when in low range. when used with the other hi/low speed selector to the left of the seat it gives you 16 forward speeds, and 4 reverse speeds.

Should not be creeper on this model, it should be truly a high low, I think I remember them adding another box (shift lever) behind this one when they want creeper out of that model.

there is another lever just to left of the seat...guy I bought it from said it was for a "super" low crawler gear if you needed some extra pulling power?!?!?

You will have to experiment with the two hi/low levers. On my l1501 which is your models little sister, the lever to the left of the seat is a normal Hi/Low range lever. Then the lever on top of the transmission is for creeper mode. Which gives a whole new meaning of low gear When both levers are in low, then put the tractor in first, it took my tractor about 5 minutes or so to get it out of the garage
