We just hired a guy to clear our pond. Come out with 2 skid steers.

One had a grinder head that ate trees. If it was too tall he would hit the middle and drop it then grind down the stump. Back to the topper and grind it too. Ate up 2 acres of soft trees in 6 hours.

The second had a cutter puller head. He would bit the tree at the base pluck it from the ground and sack them. A couple trees were too big so he just bit off chunks till he could do something with it. He even reached up and bit one 14 inch branch off the side of a dead tree hanging over the driveway. Both tractors changed to grapples and stacked 65 trees into one huge burn pile 35x20x14 tall. It took 3 days to burn 90 percent of it.

At the end of the day it was under $700 to clear what would have taken me 3 weeks to get half as clean. Buy the right tool for your use and hire the specialist to use the expensive and fast tools.

If you ever get the chance watch one of these run. I saw one a few years ago and I was impressed.
I had a JD knockoff here the last 3 weeks cutting off some of my woods and I was back there everyday watching it. This thing is controled by a pad similar to a vid game. Its computer tells haw many trees it cuts per day and how many total for the job. It also tells the cords of wood cut per day and per job. The machine they hauled the wood out to the landing with would haul 5 cords at a time and it was controled by the same way. These JD machines the cab swiveled completely around and the processer could reach out 27 foot from the machine cut the tree pull it back lay it on its side and cut to length.
I asked how many cords they could process a day and he said the best day he had was 150 cords. On these they don't back them up, they turn the cab and drive out

Can you imagine how many grease points that monster has? I bet it take three hours to hit all the nipples and check the fluids!

Makes you wonder how they are holding up in the field now that they have been in use for a few years...

On the JD there is a panel at the rear of the machine and there are a half dozen fitting which they grease daily. He said these grease all the points on the machine. He had a lincoln battery grease gun and just fed the tubes of grease to it. While I there watching he used 6 tubes of grease. The machine reminds you of something you would see on a star war program. To get out there is button that lowers the steps and another to open the hood which both are hyd. The back bumper was as high as the mans head. These that were here had 3 axles with the 2 under the saw head having tracks about 4 foot wide on them. They were here for 6 day with 2 machines and cut 30 acres for a total of 1300 cords of wood ready to haul to the pulp mill. The head is calibrated to guage the size of the wood and length to get the cors footage

That's amazing - watched several of the steep slope machines after the first.

Really cool - and I have some turf that could use one!
