I live in south texas and have a tremendous amount of hog damage. It's simply hard to believe the amount of damage they can do in such a short time. It's fairly simple to google hog damage. My question is, what would be the best implement to repair the worst of the damage. My tractor is a mx5200.

A 7.62x39 seems to work pretty well, and then donate the meat to the local homeless shelters. Hog are indeed destructive, the PaGC declared KOS( Kill On Sight) in some counties here in PA a couple years back,, I think the local rednecks took that to heart cause we never hear about hogs any more

Your box blade with the rippers down should work the area loose enough to use your FEL to backdrag your bucket (in float) to smooth out the mess.

Out here (CA) the hogs root in isolated places no more than 10' x 10' and then move on to another area where the damage is repeated. The diggings are usually not more than about 6" deep.

Discing or a spring tooth harrow would work for massive damage over a wide area but that has not been the case in my experience with pig behavior. And I used to pasture-raise hogs.

If your area is fenced then a strand of electric fence about 10" off the ground will keep them out. Just keep the fence charged since pigs will take a shock to test it. If the fence is off, they come right through.

I have around 22,000 feet of fence with heavy oaks and brush which puts the electric fence out of the question. They will tear up around 5 acres at a time. As for shooting them, they breed far quicker than I can shoot them. Here in south tx, they are considered a pestilence so many just shoot them and let them lie. I can't bring myself to do that yet. I will certainly be looking for a disc or spring tooth harrow. Thanks.

I'm in Texas but not S.TX. I wish I was closer I would come with some dogs and help relieve the population. They do a lot of damage for sure.

22,000 feet of fence... 22,000 feet of fence.... hmm.... Nope, I just can't picture owning that much fence. I guess everything really is bigger in TX! I'd love to help with that hog problem. My 30-06 has been far too quiet for far too long and wild piggy is one animal I have never bagged. I take it there is no defined season or hunting license required? Maybe we should get a OTT field trip organized and we'll all come down there to help you out. :D

Okay, going a bit off topic here...
I just did some reading on Texas pig hunting. Apparently they consider wild pig to be no different than domestic and it's perfectly legal to sell it in stores labeled simply as "pork". Perhaps I'm missing something, but that sounds like an opportunity for a guy to make a full time living selling pigs to butcher shops. I have no experience with this so maybe that's just a dumb idea? It wouldn't be the first time for me...

I also found some language that suggests anyone who is an "agent of a landowner" (what does that mean?) doing pestulance removal does not require any form of hunting license because you are not really "hunting", but if you are just a non-resident guy going hunting then you need a $300+ generic hunting license. Tagging is not required and there is no bag limit. Sounds like there is some gray area that needs to be cleared up before I'd pull the trigger.

The way I understand it is if you come to TX and hire a guide for a hog hunt you need a license. If I were to invite you onto my property to help me rid my place of a pestilence, you don't need anything but your rifle.

From what I was reading on a bbq forum a while back these don't even smoke all that well since they're wild and don't have much fat. They're basically "garbage" meat like those horrible asian jumping carp that invaded the Mississippi.

The forum may be correct about the lack of fat. The wild hogs have to forage and eat what they can find.

I used to hunt hogs at Lake Sonoma in Northern CA since they were tearing up the park there. We were allowed shotguns (slugs) and a knife (a really big one). The place is a hilly SOB with no vehicle access. For some reason, we always shot the hogs at the bottom of a valley with the park road on the ridge. Jeeze.

Anyway, my hunting partner and I would have them ground and seasoned into sausage. The butcher would add beef fat to get the right consistency. It was absolutely delicious.

Smoking for ham or bacon would likely be fairly unsuccessful. The loins were fairly dry with little fat so nose to tail went into the grinder.
