Ummm.........I would clean that area a lot better before removing the steering shaft and having that stuff fall inside. looking at the pic I would say the locknut is for the column itself.

The L275 has a lock nut (see picture) instead of the 4 bolt design. How do you get that lock nut off?
Make sure the keeper tabs are bent down then use a big wrench.

I will second cleaning off the area before you remove the steering box, as you'll just dump all that trash onto the clutch.

Read the WSM as it tells you what the purpose of that lock nut is. ;)

When you remove the pitman arm use a jaw puller not a pickle fork. A pickle fork can break the end of the sector shaft.
