RTV 900: Can't Get 12V Power to System

I tried to start my RTV 900 the other day and couldn't get any response from the ignition key, the lights, the horn or anything. There is no power at the fuse box. All fuses, including the high-amp slow-blow fuses, test OK for continuity.

The battery is new and reads 12.7 volts. The battery cables test good for continuity, and the positive battery cable is bringing power to the terminal on the starter. After that, there is none to be found.

It appears the 900's electric system gets its 12V power through that starter terminal, because that's the only connection to the battery's positive terminal. After that, I'm losing continuity somewhere.

Any ideas?

Yep, I jumpered both the positive and negative sides with cables to make sure it wasn't the battery cables causing a problem. Still no power getting to the fuse box.

The only + side connection from the battery to the 12V system is at one terminal on the starter, which I verified is getting battery power. There seems to be only one small plastic connection on the starter leading to the 900's 12V system harness, which I assume is a signal wire through the ignition switch.

The question I have is, where does the fuse box get its power from to disburse to the system?

In some cases, the starter terminal is not the source of machine power, there may be a second wire attatched to battery positive. Also a secondary ground could be your problem too, ground strap from engine to body.

Main power travels from battery to solenoid, then taps off it to feed machine, with a fuse link in line.
A test light should be all you need.
Its just a matter of following the cable and testing at every connection.

Test battery while trying starter, it could be junk also. Battery can fail under load.

There is only one cable from the battery + pole on my 2006 RTV 900. It runs to a terminal on the starter. There is only one cable from the battery - pole. It attaches to the frame. There are no other battery connections to the electrical system.

The starter has two wires connecting to the electrical system. One is that + cable from the battery to the starter. The second one is a wire attached to the starter via blade connector on the starter, and it goes into the wiring harness near the alternator.

I looked for a fusable link but can't identify any. I may have to strip the wrap on the wire harness to look for one from that second smaller wire from the starter. Make sense?

I can see ground wires from the frame to the engine. They look good.

Something isnt adding up. Positive battery cable between battery and starter. Sounds normal. Now machine needs power to run/start and other functions.
It sources power from either a terminal at battery or off big cable at starter.
Many utv's have a solenoid inline and feed the junction box from there.

Yeah, it don't make any sense to me, but I'm a novice with these things.

My Kabota tractor has one or more wires from the starter to the electric system, connected via eye-hooks at the terminal pole that the battery positive cable is connected to.

In contrast, the RTV 900 doesn't have anything on that starter terminal except the battery positive cable. Instead, the 900 has a blade connector near that positive terminal on the starter. This blade connector is wired from inside the starter case. The wire from this connector goes to the 900's wiring harness near the alternator, and behind that is the fuse box.

I figure the problem may be related to that blade connector on the starter. It shows no power even with the battery hooked up. However, I don't want to start tearing into the starter until I understand what is what. I've ordered a CD that is supposed to contain the service manual. If I can't find what's up with the info in that manual, I'll put the whole thing on my trailer and let the dealer figure it out by someone who knows what the heck he's doing, hopefully :-/

Check the slow blow fuse, it's under the fuse box cover on the back of the operator's compartment. The slow blow fuse is on the LH end.
Here is the wiring schematic and location of the fuses.

Hi thankyou for these diagrams i will try this and see if it helps. Have checked what i thought was all of the fuses but maybe missed the slow burn fuse so will take another look. I just have no power at all no ignition lights or anything yet was perfect before i shorted the power lead to body when jump starting. ?

Pull the battery terminals, clean thoroughly with a wire brush, then re-assemble with dialectic grease.

I had a similar issue after replacing the battery on my ZTR. Worked until it suddenly didn't. After testing all the fuses it's a good place to start.

looks like someone might have added another wire to the battery ???
check the slow blow primary fuse !!!!
BTW you should start your own 'thread' not tag onto a 7 year old similar post....
Also clean your machine, mud and dirt will cause LOTS of electrical 'gremlins' to come out !

Thank you! I just got this machine a month ago and it had no problems until I parked it for 3 days. The added wires are for lights added by the previous owner. I looked at the wiring diagram and it seems the slow blow fuses have a wire from the battery but on mine the only wire I have is from the battery to the starter and then a blade connector from the starter to the alternator. Where is the power coming from to feed the slow blow fuses?
