Okay, last question for the night, I have been saving them up for a bit before joining.

The B7100 I bought is a gear drive, and it growls in 2nd and Reverse. I popped the cover and found the center gear on the 2nd/Reverse shaft was pretty torn up, the ones that mesh with it seem fine for some reason (I think the PTO drives off it in one speed also)

I ordered the new gear, should be here this week, and I want to get it installed ASAP because I have a back blade for snow this winter and I need it to be able to handle a load in reverse.

The shop manual isn't very helpful, it just says "Disassembly is apparent". It looks like I can split the tractor at the front of the transmission, remove the front drive shaft and anything else keeping it from separating and then i should be able to remove the inner circlip and slide the shaft forward.

Is this correct? Or will it require me to remove the axle also?

Takes loads of "before" and "after" pictures as you disassemble. Close-ups and details from both sides of the gearbox.

Those pics will make more sense than any MSM.

Okay, tractor is split, cover is off transmission and all nuts are removed from the studs that hold the transmission to the rear axle housing.

I can't get it to come off.

Is there a hidden bolt or nut somewhere? I can't see anything in the service manual, and it feels like the seal is broken, I just can't get it to slide out.

Anyone have a trick?

I did find two more this morning, under the lift arm cover.

Now a new problem presents itself, I can't get the thing apart.

There is no mention in the manual about having to use a case spreader, but it seems like the hi/low range rail is keeping everything held together, and it looks like it sits into two recesses.

This is becoming slightly annoying.

All done.

I have to say that it was difficult to disassemble that transmission.

At least pulling the 2nd/Reverse shaft was. I had to make my own special jaws for the puller to get the case bearings out on the front side as I didn't want to smack them with a hammer.

Everything is back together now though, and it sounds like a brand new tractor in 2nd and reverse, it was a well needed fix that I think was overlooked last time the transmission was pulled. It seems like all the gears showed very acceptable wear except that one. My guess is they fixed a few of them and said screw it on that shaft.

Did you end up pulling the rear axel?
I’ve got a forward/reverse gear fork to replace and not having luck getting the trans split to install the new one
