Changing Alternaror

My Gen is going to have to be rebuilt or replaced in the next several mths. Had it rebuilt before. Now I'm thinking of going with an alternator for more amps and also to eliminating the voltage regulator. I have read several threads on here that talk about using a 10-SI or 12-SI Delco alternator. Looking for 45 - 60amps

Has anyone used a Duralast Alternator like the following one? It only has one wire that comes off the back. If you did, how did it work out? Instillation problems?
Just exploring my options at this point.

I have converted both a 1963 Ford pickup and a 1954 MF135 to alternators. I just used an extra GM alternator I had and ran a wire from the output post to the exciter connector. Making the mounting brackets was a bit of a pain but doable. The single wire alternator is pretty much plug and play once installed the the old regulator deleted.

I do have a 100amp GM alternator but I would have to fab up an upper and lower bracket. Also, it's physical size is to large.

The Duralast you show is just a clone of the 10SI style GM alternator.
I have converted a number of tractors and trucks to the GM unit with great success. As far as your 100 amp existing one you have hanging around, if you try using it there are a number of problems that will rear up quickly. Having the belt drive adequate to turn the alternator is a big challenge. You are asking the original drive pulley on your engine to handle the power transfer many times what it was designed for. The V belt will slip and overheat when asked to power a true 100 amps.
Stick to the lower amperage GM unit around 40 amps and all will work out easily. You can very simply convert a 3 wire GM to a 1 wire system as shown on the link I am providing. A 4" piece of wire is all that is needed.

Focus on converting to LED lighting to lower your power needs rather than trying to power halogen lights of high power.

I knew that the 100 would be to large both in size and demand more then the belt could deliver. Yes, I do intend on transitioning to LED. Destroyed the lights I had on the ROPS and all the wiring needs to be upgraded. I had planned on doing it last year but sometimes life gets in the way. I haven't decided if I am going to keep the original fuse block of 4 fuses or update it and add a couple extras.

I do want to keep this as simple as possible while getting the results that I want, more amps, eliminating the regulator and simplifying the wiring. Give me a house and I will wire it top to bottom with out any problem, automotive I have never developed a like or the skills for.

Do you, or anyone else, know of an alternator that will bolt right up - part#?

All the alternators that I can find that have internal regulators are 2 tab mounts nothing in the three tab like yours.

I need to add- the horsepower needed to run a larger alternator is quite substantial. Like ten horsepower under full load. The delcos need to turn 1000 rpms to excite. One wire- put sense wire closer to load than to battery, will perform better.

Yup,thats almost exactly what i was thinking,shoulda read it. Been a while since i have had to deal with these.

Buddy had 2 combines with constant alternator problems-was running 1 wire delcos, thought was the answer. Was, in fact not the answer. Took some convincing to go back to 3 wire and invest in matched batteries. Refused to replace failed battery with one that matches existing one.

Well, I think the decision and timing have been decided for me. Yesterday the charging light came on and stayed on.
What I have done:
Last night I checked the battery -12.4 volts
Checked the alternator with the tractor running - 12.4 volts
Plugged in battery tender and left on all night until 12:30 pm

Checked battery with tender attached 13.20 volts at battery and 13.20 volts at starter
Unplugged battery tender and let the tractor set for 20 min.
Checked battery voltage 12.9 volts
Glow plugs for 45 seconds and then started tractor
Checked voltage at battery, starter and from alternator post to ground, all readings 12.70 volts
Voltage at idle, 1100rpms and 2500rpms all 12.70 volts at battery, starter and from alternator post to ground

Continuity test for three wires from alternator to regulator all good
Continuity test from alternator to starter also good
Do not know how or if a regulator can be tested

Battery cables new and over sized about 2 years ago

Am I missing anything?

10SI alternators are available with 37amp, 42amp, 55amp, 61amp, and 63amp ratings

12SI alternators are available with 56amp, 66amp, 78amp, and 94amp maximum output ratings.

56 amp 12SI are harder to find and more $$.
Pros and cons of 10si and 12si?

Best suggestion for my L275.

Any suggestions for parts that should also be changed and sourcing?
Will be rewiring everything while I am at it.

10 SI alternator is a slightly smaller case if i recall. I dont have any to compare right now.

Wolfman, Will that alternator be a good fit for a B7100 or is its size too big for a B7100-D retrofit?

That one is a perfect size for the B7100 it just depends on whether you want to cut up the side panel to mount it or do like I did and mount the alternator on top. You will need a dual V belt pulley on the alternator if you go the way I did.

That alternator is really small about 4" diameter and about 6" long.
So yea I would say it's perfect for The b7100 change too.

I paid $113.00 for my alternator and it came with a dual V belt pulley installed already.
