14 years old, and this is the first time he's been nailed. Course his depth perception and eye sight aren't the greatest anymore either  we didn't realize he would kill snakes till a few years ago. He was going nuts around a root ball from a tree that had been blown over. Kept digging and digging till he got one. Course my wife was by him when he got a hold of it. He dragged it out of a hole and slung it at my wife  then started hopping around like he main lined 6 pots of coffee. He would jump in and grab the snake in the middle, sling it around like a pair of nun-chucks and then toss it again. Took me five minutes to get him away from the snake. Scooped him up and headed for the house. Wife met me at the door, took the dog and passed me the shot gun  after getting rid of the snake, and checking him for bites, he passed out and slept for the rest of the afternoon. He usually averages killing four or five snakes a year that come in from the surrounding fields. Usually I'll find the carcass while mowing

Daren, add Philadelphia cream cheese to the pill hiding foods list. The kind that comes in a little tub is convenient. It sticks well to the pill, making it harder to detect and spit out. Between hot dog, cream cheese, and ice cream you won't have to feed him!

Great suggestion on the cream cheese :D I still have to crush the pills, because he will spit it out  but I was able to get him a full dose of his steroid with out an issue. Bacon flavored cream cheese is the ticket!! :D He's doing much better tonight. He met me at the door when I got home, actually asked for a treat with his little nubbin wagging. Swelling is starting to go down. He's not looking like a Buddha doggy as bad. Still has the chipmunk cheeks though:rolleyes: He had swelled way down into his chest and belly last night, so my wife and I were worried about him today. We have some great neighbors that came down a couple times to check on him and let him out, and give us an update. He's actually snoozing now which he wouldn't do last night and back to his excessive grooming :D

Great to hear!!:D:D

Hope he continues to mend!

We're dog people, and hate it when the pet isn't feeling good!

Best wishes for his continued recovery!!

Thanks buddy, we were thinking the snake was really close to the house the way jack has been acting when we put him out. He was scared to go out the door. Neighbor just called and confirmed it. Our other dog was going ballistic by the flower bed that borders the deck just before I got home from work yesterday. We're figuring the snake was in the hostas. I'm gonna clean walmart out of moth balls tomorrow and give the flower beds a good coating.

YOUCH!

Our male got nailed by a Rattler last year. The tell-tale sign was the swelling down the neck. His strike appeared to be on the gum and jaw.

Anywho, we gave him 2 antihistamines and the Vet said we could have given him three. The two wore off during the night and the swelling kept going. Got him in the next morning and they did the same as yours, gave him an antibiotic and sent us home. When he healed up, both our dogs got the snake anti-venin booster.

Just like allergy shots, its designed to reduce reactions to the venom. His first bite appeared to be a dry bite but the next time we might not be so lucky. The most dangerous rattlers out here are the babies: They cannot control their venom and blow the whole load when they bite. Plus, they are only about a foot long when they first go mobile.

Our male terrier is a rowdy dope and the female hunting dog is a lot smarter and wiser. But even she likes to run through the brush at times though we keep them on-leash during snake season, most of the time.

Those little terriers are ratters and bred as killers. We just think they look cute. Guess we'd think otherwise if we were a rat or a snake. :)

(These guys got their summer "buzz" a few weeks back. Hitting 105 this weekend. I call the cut their summer "jammies.")

Funny flooding in some parts and still no rain here? We have been watering trees every 3rd day or so! The weeds seem to grow well in the dry soil?

No rain in the forecast.

My uncle was here and it's even drier where he farms. He farms about 3,000 acres and said he should have just dug a hole and buried his money instead of spending three weeks spreading all over the place!

Finally had a solid week of sunshine and no rain :D just finished getting everything in the yard caught up. All the weed eating trimming, and mowing. No more places for the snakes to hide :D went around all the flower beds with a thin layer of crushed moth balls

I guess the good thing with all the rain we've had. Our fig tree has blown up this year. We'll be eating figs within the next couple weeks :D

Looks like some fig preserves are on the way. We used to have to battle bees and Blue Jays for the figs when I was a kid. I've got one fig tree that produces yellow fruit. Don't remember what type it is.

I'm not sure which variety this one is. It seems to handle the cold pretty good. It used to keep the neighborhood overloaded in fruit till it got flattened by an oak four years ago  we got a few figs last year. Gonna have to put up some pie tins to keep the birds out of it. And make sure the dogs keep the squirrells occupied :D planted a couple of brown turkeys but they kept dying off. They would put up new suckers but last years growth wouldn't come back  I'll have to see if someone can identify this one so I can get a couple more :D
