ZD331 with D1305 Engine that has run extremely hot.

A little backstory first....
This machine belongs to a city not far from me and is scheduled to be auctioned off in March of next year.
It shows only 195 hours on it, the machine appearance is great overall, tires are excellent too.

Operator let it run hot enough to blow the radiator tank and actually burn his leg.

It still cranks and runs fine as it sits right now.

I was just wondering if anyone knows what kind of internal damage the D1305 might have encountered in this situation.

Head gasket, thermostat, or worse?

Any input or past experience is appreciated.

Cracked head would be my major concern because that wont be obvious. That said engines survive over heating all the time and suffer no long lasting problems if they are not run totally dry.

price out ALL the parts needed to replace the head(head of course, hoses, clamps, gaskets, maybe rad, stat of course ) ,check the list twice. ADD labour !!!
Now at auction , deduct THAT amount for what you're willing to pay...
If (IF) you get it you'll at least have cash for the parts, when needed.

Do you mean it overheated and the radiator cap let a lot of steam and water out? And then they shut it down?? I've had that happen on 3 or 4 cars / trucks in the last 60 years without long term damage.

IF that's the situation and it holds coolant now and runs well, probably no long term damage.

IF it was continued to be run a while AFTER that happened then there could be permanent damage.

I would contact the supervisor in the service dept. of the city that owns the machine, and ask him for details.

If it's a good running machine some of the employees who were familiar with it will know it's true condition and pay accordingly, I'd guess.

dunno about your area but out here, when one of these public auctions comes up, people pay stupid money for stupid JUNK. I watched a bunch of guys get into a war over a 2019 Polaris Ranger XP1000, had over 26,000 miles on it and 2500 hours, rattled terribly, transmission was noisy, couldn't shift it out of gear once IN gear (clutch issues) and every single axle was loose in their diff. No telling what else was wrong, that's just what I saw right off. These guys ended up bidding it up to $12,000 and one of them took it home. I gave up at $1500 knowing what it costs to repair all that stuff-and knowing that I have a lot of parts at work that might could repair it (free parts at that). It just wasn't worth it to me.

Seen plenty of Kubota's go like that too. LOTS of them actually.

Back to the question. Figure on replacing the cylinder head. They crack, I'm not going to say "easily" but it's not uncommon either if they've been "that" hot. You already know you need a radiator and hoses. You don't know the condition of the rest of the engine (center cylinder runs warmer than the other two, so it may very well have a scored cylinder and/or scored piston. You just don't know until you either take it apart to look, or after a few months of mowing and it swarms and then you get to rebuild or replace the engine. My advice? Don't put much $$$ into it unless you like to gamble and/or you have a stash of parts to fix it with.

...Yes I watch the auctions pretty close around here. I've bought a few things, I've sold a lot of things. Sometimes the same item is bought and later sold at the same auction. Reminds me, a number of years ago I went to a racer's auction up at St. Louis. I bought a set of RYR small block Ford cylinder heads for $1600 which is about $6000 less than what they are new. I was going to use them on my program. When auction was over, I paid the bill and went out back to pick up my items. As I was loading stuff up, some guy walks up and says I'll give you $2500 for those heads. SOLD. Paid for everything else I bought, and then some. And part of the trip expenses.

The Maintenace Supervisor is my son-in-law, that's how I found about the machine in the first place.
I have absolutely no need for a machine like that myself.
I was hoping to try to buy it at a scrap price or so, repair it and flip it.

Sounds like that won't happen based on the responses I got from you guys.

Ask him how badly it was overheated and why they are selling it. Overheating in and of itself is not disqualifying. If it were most of my tractors, trucks, and cars would be scrap.
