Hello, I am unable to get my ZD331 to start. I've been having issues with it starting, so replaced the switch under the brake pedal. Now I can't get it to start. I've turn the key and get my glow plugs and I've tried to jump the starter to get it started so I can move it from th yard to the garage to work on it. All that happened is it spun, but wouldn't catch the flywheel. Is there a war to free wheel the rear tires so that I can pull it in, or do any of you have any idea what could be the issue? Thank you.

They don't have a release for the HST. Why? Because the mower is HEAVY, and you couldn't push it anyway. You can move them, slowly, with another mower or something but go REAL slow, like slower than a snail's pace.

You bypassed the wrong terminals.

Check the PTO switch. They get grass clippings around the switch and won't make contact sometimes. It's a lot easier to get to than the brake switch ;)

I didn't by pass any terminals, just replaced the switch. I'll look at the PTO switch and see if I see anything. Is it under the PTO lever or is it down on the mower? Thanks

Mark, when you tried to jump starter, you crossed th two large terminals. There is a small terminal that you need to power to get the starter to kick engine over.

My mistake, I thought he thought I jumped the terminals in the switch instead or replacing it. I'll try the little terminal and see if that works. Thanks.

Check your fuses, no crank and wont shut off strikes ne as no power to ignition switch. Had a L4610 that did same thing, fuse connections were dirty.

Pto switch is back behind the PTO lever, kind of in front of the tire buried up behind everything. Where it lives, is usually full of clippings and is why it many times gets to acting funny.

I'm assuming it's an older 331, as they had an external fuel stop solenoid, on top of the engine (big solenoid hooked to the pump's lever). They won't shut off unless they have power applied to it. I hated them for safety purposes for that exact reason. Sometimes the combination box would die and they would not shut off.

Also, there are couple relays in the system that also can cause issues. I don't remember exactly where they are on the 331's, on the 227's and 222's they're under the seat, left of center, under a black plastic cover. Seen a few of them get corroded wires. On that subject, look closely at the main harness connectors as I've heard of a few getting pulled apart, or wires pulled out of the connectors.

Sounds like some basic electrical troubleshooting is in order. I'd highly suggest a shop manual, and make sure it's for the correct serial number. The newer ones had the fuel cut solenoid kind of built into the pump/engine block that when +12 was removed, the engine would die (works backwards of the older ones).
