Recently purchased a 2008 ZD28. Unit is in great shape with under 550 hours on it. I have recently serviced it (fuel filters and fresh fluids) got it all ready to go for the season. When I went to cut the grass for the first time today I made about three passes and noticed a trail of fuel on the ground. Shut the mower down and noticed that the small round cap below the injection pump had come out and fuel was leaking from said area. A bearing was visible in the approx 2" hole the cap was covering. Can anyone tell we what the cap is covering and if I can reinstall? What would cause it to pop out and can I put it back/should i use some RTV if I do pop it back in? Thanks for your help!

You sure it was fuel and not motor oil?

That cap should be covering the fuel cam shaft, but they should be no fuel behind the cap.

If it's fuel you have a serious issue, like an injection pump that has damage internally.

You need to post some photos, You'll need 5 posts to do that, so make 5 random post on this thread or others.

I did fill the machine with fuel before starting to mow and accidentally filled it to the brim, possibly blocking the vent in the fuel cap. Can't imagine that would cause the fuel can shaft cover to pop off

That cap blocks off the back of the fuel cam shaft, it normally where the hydraulic pump would be attached on a tractor.

Check the oil level to make sure it's not over filled.

The cap probably was not installed right from the beginning and just needs replaced, I would not use RTV on it as that could push RTV into the bearing behind it and into the oil system and could cause damage.

Well I checked the engine oil and it certainly isn't overfilled. Quite the opposite because most of it is spread across my front yard. FML. Would overfilling it when I serviced it cause the cap to blow off? I was diligent in following the recommended capacity when refilling with Kubota brand 10w-30. Now I'm concerned I ran the engine while low on oil. I'm on a roll

You might have over filled it, but not likely.

If you didn't notice any warning lights your probably fine, it takes a huge loss of oil for these to have a real issue.

I'm thinking it's just a bad cap and nothing more, that's why I suggest a new cap. ;)
