I bought a new z421/54" deck this spring for a good price. One of the reasons I chose the z over competing makes was the larger wheel and tire size, it has 24x9.5x14 rear wheels. I noticed when cutting that my grass is showing signs of compaction as we have sand soil here. The 60" deck mowers have a rear tire size of 24x12x14, and the dealer says the wider tires will reduce compaction.
I can change the rears for $700, will the extra 2.5" width make any difference?

That price seems high. I know I’m not comparing apples to oranges but I just paid $1100 for a set of 4 Michelin defenders installed on my truck. You should talk to the salesperson and not the parts guy

I believe you will really like the wider tires/wheels. I have a Z421-54 and I ordered the wider units pre-COVID, when things weren't so crazy priced. They are awesome on wet ground. I also put the wider tires/spindles on the front. I sold my other rear set and made back a lot of my investment. They make a difference and leave no trenches.

Thanks I would think so as well. For now I lowered the PSI down to 6 (from 12).
I'll probably go ahead and order wider wheels if I can find a set at a good price.

That’s a good question! I like the wide tires, but they’re not popular where I’m shopping. I guess I was planning on ordering them through my dealer or Messicks wheeler the time came. I haven’t sent them on other websites.

I never bought them. Not spending $700 for better mower rims.
Although if you want to work out a deal maybe ill relent

I have the Z422 with the narrower tires and suspension seat. After 20 or so hours of mowing this summer the narrower tire (54” deck) are working out fine. I have some hills and my worry was lack of traction but the tires have done everything I have asked them to do. Love my Z422-54! Sandy soil here as well but with good drainage. For $700 to upgrade, I’m glad I stayed with the originals.
