Yes, another newbie question, this time on fittings!

Hey folks, I recently (last month) purchased my first tractor (larger than a “garden” tractor), and found new things to do with it. So I purchased another loader attachment (my wife is still okay with me.. so far!)

this is a tree/bush puller. It arrived, looks okay (I would have covered the hoses), but I immediately ran into an issue…. My Kubota l3902 uses 3/8 flat face, and the implement came with 1/2” flat face. Being in the boonies, I ordered a set of the appropriate connectors. They arrived today, but… I can’t put them on. Turns out there is a male nipple from the hose to the the quick connect, and the one on the hose currently is a 3/8 to 1/2.
I think I finally identified the connector as a JIC to NPC fitting…. But I can’t find any to purchase? My semi-local dealer said he hadn’t a clue, of course.

the fitting has an inverse flare on the 3/8 side (which means it’s jic, right?)

any help would be appreciated!

That is possibly NPTM ( National Pipe Straight Mechanical) not JIC:
Look on the bottom of the page for a cut side look at the threads.

FEMALE PIPE SWIVELS (NPSM)

National Pipe Straight Mechanical (NPSM) fittings are similar to NPTF, except they have a parallel thread and seal on an internal 30° seat. A properly chamfered NPTF male fitting will mate with a NPSM female.

It could also be a Metric or BSPP thread, hard to tell by a picture.
One way to tell is if it's NPTM it will thread into a female NPT fitting easily.

This will help you figure it out:

Ahh…. Thank you very much! Okay…. a Standard pipe thread will not screw into the female… the 1/2 inch does thread into a standard pipe coupler, so that one is figured out. And it does match a standard thread gauge.

but the 3/8 side only goes in a couple of turns before it binds. Metric? Hmm.. no metric thread gauge.. (image that! Brief switch to Amazon….)

I thought about replacing the hoses entirely, but the cylinder fittings are the same thread, so my option is limited to cutting the one end of the hose end off, and hoping my local shop can crimp a new end on…. I’m hesitant to do that, as it seems to be a one way/one shot try. They weren’t sure either…

I can’t tell if this part:

is what I need. It doesn’t have a diagram of what the ends are. It looks like NPTF on one side, and standard pipe on the other…. which is what I need..

Any thoughts?

Then again, it’s straight on the 3/8 side, not tapered.. and does not screw into an npt…
sigh. A few more days waiting for parts again…

Are you trying to go from the hose (male "flare fitting") to an adapter, to the flat face?
A photo of the hose end would help if so.

hose pics… huh… why didn’t I think of that…. Been a long week already.. sorry!

okay, here is the hose end, and the fitting assembled as I got it, with the 1/2” flat face connector. I naively thought I could just order a 3/8 flat face connector, and pick up a different bushing. Silly me.

on the assembly, you can see it goes from flat face to bushing to hose. I’m “just” trying to replace the flat face with a smaller one.

Thanks for all the help!

That looks like a BSPP male and female connection
see this link to see if it helps

Another thought for the future. NAPA stores ( at least here in Mid-Michigan) make hydraulic hoses. They could cut off the fitting on one end and replace it with one that matches up to your 3/8" FF coupler.

Lots of folks have been in your position. Myself included!!
Provided the existing nipple you have is tapered pipe thread, they should work. Use a Verneir caliper to measure the diameter.
Best of luck!

Thanks, i did check with them last night, after I posted.. they weren’t positive they could do it. “Probably, but not sure”. I didn’t want to risk it, since they couldn‘t match the fitting to the cylinder for a new hose if it didn’t work.

But I have a new qq on order, so we shall see if that will work. One of the frustrating things of living here is the driving time to find ”odd” things. But he location normally makes up for it, so overall good!

thanks for the thought!

The smaller end is not JIC. Looks like standard male NPTF. The cone seat is used to mske the seal when a female pipe swivel (NPSM) id screwed on to it.

The larger end has PTFE tape on it so its most likely tapered pipe (NPTF).

Nothing silly or naive. - thats all you need. The hose swivel is female pipe. What is the port thread on your new coupler?

So, BSPP for the win! Got in my 3/8 adapter before I got in my couplers, so hooked them on. works great!

thanks to everyone who had ideas, and especially to those who got it right!

Off to pull stuff out of the ground…

Had good experience with this outfit rebuilding my grapple 3rd function. No affiliation.
