Wrench and socket sizes?

Still waiting on my BX2380 delivery....any day now....and I am getting 'ancy'.

While I wait, youtube videos are my friend. I've watched quite a few by "GP Outdoors"....I am sure many of you have seen his videos. I don't know if he was referring to his B2601 or his newer LX33-something, but he mentioned "I" would need bigger wrenches and sockets to deal with working on a tractor.

I have a pretty full toolbox (many toolboxes, actually) but not sure of the sizes he was referring to.

Can anyone give me an idea of the sizes we're talking about please?

Congratulations - I would suggest that you sit back and wait to look at it.

A few "large" metric sockets for wheel nuts and the like. You can decide on hand tool or power tool once you have the machine.

You won't need much.

My socket set goes up to size 38mm and up to a 2" standard size. So far, I haven't found a nut/bolt that I didn't have a socket that it wouldn't fit.

I just torqued my loader and wheel mounts with the tools I bought for the tractor. I purchased the following Tekton tools from Home Depot (they had them in stock, unlike so many places, at the best prices):
1/2" socket wrench, 25-250 lbs. 1/2" Torque wrench, 10-32MM socket set, 3/8-1.25 socket set and a 3 piece extension set.
The whole thing was less than $250, and it is overkill in terms of sockets for my size tractor.

I don't think I've used anything larger than 19mm on my B5200.

My LX2610 required some in the lower 20s MM. Also, I needed several close in size. The loader required 3 different sizes; sets that skip sizes might be a problem.

The stuff I had for working on my cars and light trucks the past 40 odd years has covered everything I have needed for my L4701 so far. There’s probably some specialty something that’s required for something I haven’t done and hope to never need to do, but I certainly didn’t need to run out and pick up a 3/4” or 1” drive big and bigger socket set or any such as that. I’d suggest get your hands on the tractor before you start buying more tools.

With all the overnight ship and tool stores around the corner just purchase certain size and specialty tools as needed/required. No matter how many tools you have there'll always be some tool you'll need (want).

I don't know about your BX, but having the right combination of socket and correct length wobble extension made the difference in changing the starter on an M7040.
As these tractors get more compact, there are more obstructions. You may have the right size socket but have to use a different style tool to get behind something blocking access for a socket wrench.

Personally I would not get any wrench set larger than 19mm. Anything larger would be on a "as needed" basis.

I love open/box combination ratchet wrenches.

CUT tractors like ours require a basic set of tools similar to what you’d need to work on a car.

It’s not like heavy equipment or perhaps large agriculture tractors that might require very large tools like 3/4” drive ratchets, etc and up.

so I wouldn’t sweat it - if you have a basic set of tools you’ll be good to go and you can add from there as needed.

the internet is a great place, how to videos will show you what tools you’ll need so you can prep in advance of doing a repair.

Make sure you have at least a half dozen 10mm sockets and wrenches. They are afraid of the big machines so they hide.

I would suggest that the proper tool that isn't in your toolbox is a 4 post lift. Makes getting under the tractor a lot easier than laying on the ground.

Good to know. I have a lot of big SAE sockets and wrenches. My metric goes up to 32 mm sockets (+ a handful of randos I got singletons of for specific jobs). Wrenches only go up to 24 or so. Somebody on here told me that once I get that big I may find that my big SAE wrenches are "close enough". I looked around the outside of the tractor, front end, etc. and didn't find anything I didn't have a socket for. I think I'll wait and get what I need as needed. Besides, they told me once I got rid of my green tractor and bought orange I wouldn't have to worry about breakdowns!

.... I’d suggest get your hands on the tractor before you start buying more tools.
