Wire Connector

A few months ago my tractor wasn't starting.
The battery was good. The starter had been replaced as well
as the alternator. A friend came out and found a wire connector that
was bad..I think it may even have been melted or close to it.
He put a new connector on it. Thursday night the same issue...tractor wouldn't start.
I decided to check the wire to see if the connector was still tight.
It was really hot. I am not a mechanic. I have no idea about this stuff.
I have replaced the wire connector with a twist and the tractor started.
But, I am concerned about the wire being so hot.
I appreciate any thoughts you might have.

You should get your friend back.
They were savvy enough to find the problem.
They will be savvy enough to take the time to make a better repair. Maybe they were rushed last time.
You should not be able to feel heat from that connection.

Judging by the wire color and size, I'm wondering if the part that was removed was a fuse or Fusable link?
It would help if you zoomed out for the pic, and said where it is.

If that was a fusible link that was removed .......... you need to replace it!

As for getting hot - resistance, is what builds heat. Hot is a relative term, a wire will get warm/hot when a good amount of electrons flow on it, but the heat should not be such as to burn/melt anything. If that fusible link WAS there and burned, there is something else wrong that you are bypassing at this point.

Looking at the picture - those two ends - do they terminate on those two screws?

If it were a fusable link how would I know what kind to get?
If that was a fusible link that was removed .......... you need to replace it!

Yes. One wire goes to one screw and the other wire goes to the other screw. I don’t know anything about fusible links. How do I get the right kind? Thank you so much for your help.

The factory original is obsolete.
You can get a MAXI fuse holder from an auto parts store, like Napa or such.
Do you have wire crimps and ends?
If not send me a PM with your address and I'll send you what you need, I have a bunch in stock

I can't find any specs on what size the original was.
I would get 30, 40, 50 slow blow fuses
Start with the 30 if it works for a while then pops go up one step
and on until it holds
If it pops a 50 there is probably an issue in the circuit.

When this life is over….you are going to tractor-heaven…. where NO tractors EVER have emissions-controls or ROPS (they never roll-over) ….and fuel is Free!

In another post, someone has the M4060.pdf wiring diagram ! There's a 60 amp fuse with big red wires on one side going to alternator and igition switch, other side goes to starter and battery.
If this IS the 'mess' you're dealing with then you'll need to replace all those wires unless you can properly crimp and seal the connections. Marrettes and handcrimpers will not be sufficient and lead to problems.

I looked at the M4060 (tractor 30+ years newer) and yes there is also an 80amp in that circuit.
I don't know of any of the 30+ year old tractors that large of an amp circuit in them, so I hesitate putting to large of a Fuse in it, I rather the OP pop a few $1 fuses than Fry $1000 worth of wiring.

oops..misread the 5 for a 6.....
the light grey (gray ) text is hard for these eyes to see some numbers
joys of old(er) age....
just looked at Calypso's PDF( #15 )..it shows a 60 amp 'main ' fuse.
