Winterizing fuel...maybe a little late

Hey all.

Colder nights snuck up on our area a little early this year and my B2650 is the only piece of diesel equipment I've ever owned, so I wasn't really thinking about the impacts on the tractor.

I didn't get any fuel treatment added and it's been down to about 15F or so a couple of nights. Tank was filled a couple of weeks ago and is probably 80% full- do you think I've caused an issue by not treating it already?

Probably not if the added fuel was fresh. It needs to get below 0 before I add any additives.

I'm no expert. But I think you'll be fine. I just bought some Power Boost (or whatever its called) when I was in the parts store today. Get some and dump a couple ounces into your tank.

If you are worried, just wait until it warms up again.

Neither tractors nor fuel have any memories of how chilly it was "yesterday".

I did dose the full fuel tanks on both oil burner tractors with Power Service yesterday. An once of prevention and all that.

The two 5 gal jugs are needing refilled now. I'm assuming 'winter blend' is at the pumps ...

That stuff works pretty good in gel'd up diesel situations. They also make an additive to prevent geling, in a white container.
Up here, they start winter blend at the pumps in early November usually. Most stations claim it to be good to -10F.

Otherwise, put a space heater or salomandor/torpedo heater near the machine (in a safe manner of course), for a few hours, and let it warm up some before you give it a go.

In extreme situations, we've lit whole bags of charcoal under Dozers and Excavators that get left out in the elements. It works.

The short answer is that you are fine. I would add a winter additive now though. I use Power Service winter additive, which can be added to untreated summer diesel when temps are above 0 deg f. That’s per Power Service.... with the Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP) of about the same temp (0 deg f) I would want it added a little earlier!

Around here in the U.P. They sell both number 1 and 2 fuels. Plus blended fuels. I just picked up number 1 now that we are in the 10-20 degree lows. The book states you can use either fuel.

Anyone use Howe's Diesel Treat? The previous owner of my BX used it all year round, so I've continued to do the same

Like another poster said just put a few ounces of Power Service White or similar in your existing fuel tank. Our co-op has only #1 and the gas stations have gone to a winter blend. Even with the #1 I still put additive in since I don't use the tractor that much and want to make sure it is over protected.
