Will my L3901 pull a 4 row planter? And what size disc?

Hi all,

I have a small hobby farm and own a L3901 that generally meets my needs. However, I just bought more acreage. The land deal included a 4 row seeder. There is an 8 acre field for which I would like to plant corn in the near-term. There is an additional 44 acres leased to a neighbor for grazing cattle. I might want to use that in the future for crops as well. I am wondering if my L3901 is sufficient for this? Further, I just realized the planter has a hydraulic hose so I would need to invest in a rear hydraulic kit. Am I good for this or should I be looking for a bigger tractor?

Assuming my tractor will work with the planter, I also want to stop borrowing my neighbor's disc. What size disc could I be pulling?

Thanks!

If you have R4/Industrial tires, not a chance... if you have R1/Ag's you might be able to depending on soil condition. Buy an older larger tractor which would complement the L3901. I would not replace the L3901, just add a lower cost utility tractor.

There are too many variables to give you an accurate size recommendation for the disk size, but in general I would guess a 6 footer?

Thanks. I have R1 tires filled with Rim Guard ballast.

I've used the MX6000 to pull a Schafer 8ft disc that's a bit of a beast and which probably weighs around 2,000lb, but the MX handles it with ease. Obviously, the gang angle, the angle of attack, the weight of the disc, the type of ground etc. all make a difference.

Go to Land Pride's website and use the "performance matched" option to see which models are recommend for your L3901.
