Unfortunately the 500’ rule doesn’t seem to apply to aircraft weighing less than 55 lbs.

That is well outdated. Things have changed quite a bit since that was written. The AMA is still fighting against some of the restrictions that lumped scale models into the mix.

However, other than commercial use such as Amazon delivery, it does not exempt anyone from flying over personal property without permission. It is also illegal to fly over people without special permit. It is also illegal to fly to take video and post on You Tube without special permit. You must be licensed to do any of that, including video or pictures for real estate marketing and such. If you use a drone to take video and post it on youtube, and the video is monetized, the FAA can fine you for doing so, they send you a letter first as a warning.

The exemption the AMA is fighting for are model aircraft flown at designated AMA flying fields without any restrictions or taking tests or putting ID chips in them. Majority of my planes are hand built from a box of sheets and sticks, not formed in a plastic mold making machine or assembled in China. Lumping our hand built scale planes in with the manufactured mutli rotors is a huge mistake on the FAA part.
