I just changed the oil in my L3302 tractor.
200 hour change. No issues before change.
Recommended filter.
10w30 tractor oil non synthetic w/ correct amount.
Nothing leaking.
Went to mow and the exhaust puffed a good bit of white smoke and i heard some knocking. The RPMs went up kinda like it would with a regen the went back down.
HM light came on and temp was just below red line.

what did i do wrong? Please help!!!
I wish i could post video.

What is the oil level on the dipstick?
It looks like maybe more than max. I need to check it again this morning when it’s not running so hot.
I’m not sure how it would be high. I put 6.7 L in it. Maybe not all drained out. Do you think too much oil would do that? Overheat?
I dont see an overheated engine.

Sounds like you overfilled the engine and its causing some sort of code. Fix the oil level.

The “correct” amount of the refill is not that noted in the specs, but what brings it to fill on the dipstick.

Often capacities are listed for a new dry engine. A change doesn’t drain everything, so the refill is often less than the rated capacity.

Couple things. First off, I’m not the best mechanic on this forum, but I agree with others above. If you put in the amount of oil specified in the manual rather than the amount indicated by checking the dipstick, it was almost certainly overfilled. Agree setting the level correctly per the dipstick is first step.

If it was not overfilled, the only logical explanation for overfill now is introduction of some other fluid into the crankcase. That would be coolant, fuel, or hydraulic oil. When you remove the excess oil, suggest keeping some in a clean container in case you want/need to test it later for contaminants. Also suggest posting a pic of the dipstick showing how much it’s over and a pic clearly showing what the oil looks like (honey color, smut black, milky, etc.) along with how many hours the oil has on it at the time of the pic.

Oil analysis labs are even better than looking at pics. If you think something is possibly busted and your tractor is now mixing fluids in the crankcase, I’d have the oil analyzed before I started pulling the head or splitting the tractor. No point in pulling the head if it’s hydraulic fluid and no point in splitting the tractor if it’s coolant. That’s why I’d set a clean sample or two on a shelf even if I thought I’d never need them. (Maybe that thought process is why I’m running out of shelves.)

If you overfilled it with oil don't be too surprised if...
1: The code doesn't go away
2: The smoke doesn't go away
3: The engine will eventually shut down
3 And your bank account doesn't get really light, unless you have KTAC Insurance.

If oil got into the exhaust system it's going to be an extremely expensive fix!

Okay so as embarrassed as I am I felt I should share my stupidity. There are 2 drain plugs. I only drained one.
I did a complete oil change today and ended up draining 10 qts. Geeez.
I wish I could say I saw those who gave that advice and It worked. Nope. My wife watched a you tube and asked did you pull both plugs.
WTH.
I have an appointment to turn my man card in tomorrow morning.
Good news is it is running great now. Bad news is, my wife won’t shut up.
It’s always something.

If your model has 2 drain plugs, did you drain both?
And this was the issue. I wish I would have read this before my wife watched the you tube video. I will not live this out for a good bit.
Thanks for your comment and great evaluation of the issue.

Don’t feel to bad. Took my Mercedes in for an emissions recall (i do all my own work never goes to dealer). The recall had to have oil drained. Dummies at dealer over filled by 7 quarts. Only takes 7. They doubled it.
Experts aint always expert.. glad you fixed it easy..
