White smoke in a diesel can indicate ineffective fuel burn in the combustion chamber dumping raw fuel into the exhaust. Possible causes range from clogged filter, bad head, faulty injector, intake gasket. If it was me, and it was an occasional puff that didn't sting my eyes (Raw fuel), I'd run it like it is. If it is constant or worse under acceleration, it's important to figure out and fix before it gets too expensive. If it only does it when it's cold, then goes away, it could just be condensation in the pipe.
