BTW, USA spent millions to make a pen work in outerspace... the Russians solution...... a pencil !!

I'd probably count as pretty young, but even I know what that is. I knew how to read it at one point. Now every time I grab it I have to retrain myself. I prefer the dial. Still no batteries, slightly less robust, but way WAY easier to read.

As has been posted already: vernier caliper. Still have one and used it in the last month. Also have dial calipers. I have some slide rules too but don't use those. ;P

I bought some glass this afternoon and took my calipers along. The glass I was replacing measured .114" thick and fit in a slot that won't accept 1/8" So I asked what was the thickness of the glass they had to sell and they had no way of measuring it precisely, then I pulled out the calipers and measured their 1/8" stock and it was .118" which is 3mm. That was close enough so I bought it after it was cut to size.
