I came in to a second BX bucket. Guy had replaced it because the blade had taken on the famous smile. That I can fix, no problem. Question is, why would I need a second bucket? Can I do a mod to this new found bucket to make a second useful bucket? I already have quick hitch capability...

I am interested in what the group has seen/ made/ dreamed of. Show us modified buckets!

Some options I have thought about are:

1. a deeper bucket to make faster work of moving lighter loads like mulch
2. a bucket with teeth for ground engaging work
3. a narrower bucket that helps with digging harder soils?
4. just cut the back of the bucket off and make something entirely different.

Looking forward to ideas!

Grapple, bucket with tooth bar ,plain bucket is what I have . Also have tree spade and stump bucket for th plain bucket. Lots of possibilities for a plain bucket as far as bolt/ clamp on Eqipment out there . My L3901 is really versatile with what I have. Good luck on all your projects.

Give it the 5 gallon finish and put it on Craigs List and off it.

Yeah one of them fancy 4 way buckets. If you got the time and skills that would be the ticket,, just a thought

Turn it into a rock bucket,
Cut out the bottom, leaving the leading edge in place
Weld in some flat bar or RHS

This is great for sorting timber from top soil and leaves
For finer stuff add some welded mesh

With mesh in place it perfect for sorting out topsoil or ash from charcoal in the fire pile

Mount a semicircular pipe out front, so crumbs end up in the bucket and used for cutting or cleaning ditches.

Hmmm, now there's something I could use! This may be a winner! "Cut bottom out and weld in RHS" Now something is coming together! I think I could make a few different inserts. Maybe use RHS on about 3 or 4" centers for rough sort and the structure of it. Then have a few grills that go in on top of that for finer sorts like my compost pile, soil, or rocks. Yep! Thank you for the idea!

Haven't seen an example of this, now i must go look around.

I have this rock bucket from bxattachments. I find this useful for separating rocks as well as turning the dirt over in my wife;s gardens. I also use it for turning mulch and leaves into the garden soil. Check out this link.

Once you have the base cut out you can easily fix the smile then weld in whatever you have (flat bar, RHS, Pipe, ect) as per the pics above

Get a cheep sheet of 40mm weld mesh and cut it to size and add some mount tabs
You will get 2-3 screens out of a sheet
If you cut the second screen to be offset the yo then get 20mm mesh

So just run 1, 2 or no layers depending on what you are screening

Thanks for the input, pics and mesh recommendation! Pretty much exactly what I now plan to build. I will post when done and stress tested.

Thanks to all who had input.

Do keep in mind that Kubota offers 2 distinctly different FEL buckets, a light duty materials bucket (which is what the picture is) and a heavy duty excavation bucket (which it isn't).

Easy to tell the difference beside bucket weight. The HD bucket will have a round welded tube top section and the underside of the bucket will be a double welded layer of steel sheet with a thick cutting edge and long cutters on each side of the verticals.

Why the cutting edge has a smile. it's inadequately supported in the middle for hard digging. I have both buckets.

Kubota buckets are not all created equal by a long shot.

You can get the smile out by shrinking the cutting lip but it will return if the center section isn't gusseted on the underside with flat plate.

Buyers wrongly assume they are saving a few bucks with the cheaper light duty bucket when in fact they aren't at all because it's built for material handling and not digging. The go out and dig with it and first thing happens is, the make the cutting edge smile and the the end sheet welds let go because the 'smile' pulls the side sheets inward putting extreme stress on the side sheet welds.

I just repaired one for a customer last week a bit worse than yours.

Cutting the floor out to make that 'sifter bucket' will render the bucket extremely flimsy and will allow the cutting edge to deform even more easilly
