I know this is kind of a silly question but I don't like to mix different brands of oil.
I have been using Rotella T6 oil in my Kubota stuff (L3800, Z724 mower ,400 RTV ,BX 1850 )now I have a B2410 to service also. It seems that Rotella T6 is getting hard to find .
What brand of synthetic oil would be your choice to switch too, if you couldn't find the brand you have been using ??

Search out buying it in pails(semi service center/truck supplier). You are having trouble finding jugs, because that is what everyone wants. You service enough equipment to justify it. Kubota is probably a semi synthetic, but it is available in pails at every dealer I have been to.

I just got 2 five quart containers of M1 0w30 ESP rated for gasoline and light duty diesels for $32 each. Enough to do both the Isuzu and JD diesels. JD has been running with it. The Isuzu has Castrol 5w30 for VW diesel engines. Got from Advanced Auto.

All motor oil comes from crude from anywhere/everywhere around the globe…poured/mixed together and goes into a refinery (most commonly Shell Oil/SOSUS down in Pasadena/Deer Park, Galena Park, TX) … and is refined to the same standards and placed in different branded bottles and priced according to the snob factor.
Synthetic is the same oil except further refined to a different standard. (The additive package of some synthetics are slightly better than others but that difference is minor and unworthy of concern. There have been studies made of Amsoil vs Mobil1 vs Lucas vs Generic that claim to “prove” one or the other outperforms their competition…but in actual practice it makes no difference because they ALL meet the minimum standard upon which oil-change periods are based.)

As long as it meets the same standard…. it makes absolutely no difference what ”brand—label” the bottle has on it….. pay as much or as little as you like for the same product. IMO

It’s what popped up when I looked for who refines most motor oil.

I used to work in that refinery complex. “The Grass is Greener in Pasadeener…and so is the Air!”. … used to be what we said.

Look in your owner's manual for the viscosity grade and the API classification, remembering that most diesel oils API classification is backward compatible. As GeoHorn and hagrid said, buy what meets those specs.

Pennzoil's synthetic is made from NG. M1s most flexible oils are made from PAOs, yeah from crude oil but a LONG way from crude oil. Rest of M1's stuff is blended with Group III stuff which is likely the hydrotreated slack wax from the Baytown refinery in the special hydrotreater there that converts slack wax to high quality oil.

Rest of the so-called synthetics are Group III, maybe some Group II, oils. These are highly hydrotreated, Group III hydrodewaxed as well, from crude oil. Shell T6 is either Group II or III, not sure which. They've probably put in hydrodewaxing in the last 20 some years I've been retired. Strange thing now is that the Singapore refinery, combined Exxon and Mobil ones, is the largest EM lube oil producer. Shell also has a large lube oil plant in Singapore on another island. Actually, EM's refinery is no longer on an island because they've reclaimed land between the Exxon and the Mobil sites. The EM combo had a huge variety of solvent refining 20 years ago. May have added hydrotreating since then. Don't know.

Still lots of Group I solvent refined stuff with gobs of additives for engine oils, not synthetic.

Hey now - this is not what you said to me in the last oil thread?
and I said I wasn't getting into any more of these... ;)

Thanks for all of the replies.
It is looking like I will be useing oil that meets the manufactures specs and not worry about the brand so much.
I have always changed oil regularly and still have trouble letting my truck go past 2000 miles without changing oil. I guess that tells you that I'm old school. :)

My wifes’ Toyota specifies Full Synthetic as the appropriate oil….then…waay down buried in the manual they ”allow” standard motor oils if the oil-change period is cut in half from 10K to 5K miles.

The real beauty…IMO…of synthetic oil is that I can be “lazy” about accuracy of when I ACTUALLY perform the oil change… If her car is due NOW…. I can wait a week or two if I don’t feel like NOW. :giggle:

I got REALLY lucky this afternoon. Was at Menards to return something and had my 15% off bag. Went over to the oil aisle. Lo and behold kind of hidden was 2 gallons of Rotella T-6 5W-40. My fav juice for all my stuff. Score!
May try Farm and Fleet and pick up a pail as well if I can find it. Then I am set for a couple years or so :D

Funny thing- After trying everywhere around here over a couple of weeks, the T6 5w-40 I finally found at HomeDepot was also hidden in the back on the bottom rack out of sight.

I never thought to look there either before this which is why I posted. I had tried all local auto parts chains, TSC, Napa, Walmart, Amazon, and struck out.
