I was gonna ask you how many of the 6088 and 6418 tubes you reckon you've soldered in your career? Personally, I'd guess thousands...

We had a filament voltage test card extender we used. Put the card extender in, put the card under test on the extender, and turn the filament voltage down until the tube crapped out. I don't remember the go/no go value, but after going through the spare card kit and getting all the spares to pass, it made troubleshooting that POS a LOT easier.

Was "the vault" suspended from the overhead in a building at the Portsmouth shipyard? That's where I did both 37 and 14. Pull a fresh set of whites out of the locker at the barracks, and by the time I'd walked across the shipyard to get to the vault I was dirty and soaked in sweat (Portsmouth in the Summer...)

Vault suspended? Stating to bring back memories! The write up was pretty good. I solved the banging on the circuit board problem. I devised a tool from a screw driver and went in and tightened all those pinch connectors. It took days but no more banging on the circuit boards. I even submitted it to NSA as a (beny sug) beneficial suggestion, never heard anything! when the 37t dropped sync all the R's were playing catch up. . I had two 37Ts side by side so both would have to fail. I can still bring back the smell of flux soldering in those tubes. and we did not always start at 0000z (time diversity) which could through in a whole other encryption parameter.

ya think we are still subject to $10000 fine and 10 in the brig?
I liked crypto a lot. I could also hide out from those above me.

Small town lawyer. Brothers (retired accountant & equip. salesman) both have L-series. The salesman says that with his additional power (29 hp compared to my B20 @ 20) he can move more dirt, but my counter is that I can move dirt quicker and deeper (I'm the only one with a hoe) ... and so goes the friendly jabbing. Our wives sigh and declare that we need to arrange an orange play date or Kubotalympics.

Mostly accountant but did a stint as I/S director for a couple of years back in the 90's. My only time around any heavy equipment was growing up in the oilfield in S. Texas and spending some time around swabbing units and very little wireline or work over rigs. But it was really good experience being around resourceful hardworking men that could arrive at a workaround while we were miles back in a bay on a barge or back in some ranch in a river bottom miles from the nearest pavement. Seems like there was constantly some snag that we had to get rigged up to a well and going. No cell and CB range was too limited. You had to get by with what you had in the pickup or on the rig. It was good experience and since moving to the sticks and getting my little tractors its the first time I've been around diesel, chains & boomers in years.

Realized recently that the beauty of retirement is that one can exit with significantly developed professional experience without giving it to some self-assuming heir that has less than 5 years experience but claims to have been around the world once and talked to everyone at least twice.

23 years with the same company next month in the Packaging Machinery Business. Started as a Field Service Enginner, now ride a desk in middle management....no more travel

Got my start 33 years ago right out of HS in the USN as an Electronics Tech which took me to Antarctica and the South Pole of all places. Wouldn't trade that experience for the world.

Now just biding time til retirement where I can spend my days playing with the tractor, riding the scooter and whatever else tickles my fancy.

I worked in State government 31 years as an IT Tech building, repairing, installing and performing helpdesk functions on computers. I spent the last three years installing new computers in prisons for the inmates to get their GED certificates thanks to Obama. The real working state employees still had years old computers that were constantly needing repaired as they had no money for upgrades. I am now retired and farming 700 acres of corn and soybeans.

Went to college to get an ME degree and then worked as an oil drilling engineer for a number of years.

Decided to go back to school for a graduate degree and then went to work in the rare metals industry and managed operations in maintenance and engineering.

After a major union strike I decided I wanted out of this environment so I and went to work for one of the major computer companies and worked in facilities, then product manufacturing and then business management.
Finally retired from that company after 30 yrs.

Now I'm just living the dream
