What is this knob?

I just bought my first Kubota, a B8200. It is a great little tractor and I know I am going to enjoy it for many years. I do not have the manual for it, so can someone tell me what this knob is for? It is very difficult to pull and I am scared to pull too much since I do not know what it does.

Welcome to OTT. It's your decompression knob used for starting with a weak battery. Sounds like the cable is ceased make sure the lever that the cable runs to on the valve cover isn't stuck open.

thanks Dion for the quick response. I will check that and see if it helps. Guess that is why the guy I bought it from did not know what it was - he never had to use it.

It shouldn't cost much to fix if anything at all but I would suggest it would be worth it. In 93 we had a bad blizzard and got more snow than I have ever seen. It had blown up the hill out of my pasture and the drifts in my yard were up to 6 feet deep. The shed where my B 7100 was parked didn't have anything but the roof sticking out. I actually had to push and pull snow out of the way then slide thru on my belly to get to my little beast. The temp had been around zero for several days and even with a good battery no dice. Had it not been for being able to decompress the engine enough to help it spin just fast enough to crank it would have been a lost cause.

Now you think, big deal. Crank it when it warm up some. That little knob saved my 83yr old Uncles life that day. He had lost his power and had no heat. It took me 4 or 5 hrs to get my tractor out and drive it 3/4 of a mile to his house but I got a path open up where we could help him walk out. I had never used the decom. before that but it literally was a life saver.

To the OP:
Mine was stiff and I workled the cable cover (spiral wound) with some penetratign oil and freed it up. Mine had the knob missing and I just put a piece of chain on it to the key.
