For more ground-engagement (disc or box blade) stuff, I use lowest hole. For brush hog, I go middle hole. Don’t think I’ve ever used the top hole, myself.

If tractor is equipped with draft control (few small tractors are, anymore) use the lowest hole that results in proper draft control operation for ground engaging implements.

Without draft control, I use the top hole for just about everything.

Do yourself a favor.

With an implement hitched up, put the top link in the top pin hole position and adjust accordingly.
Raise the hitch, pay attention to how the implement is raised and it's positioning fully raised. Measure the implement from the ground front & back.
Now do that same exact thing for all the different pin locations, always adjusting the top link how you would normally have the implement set to start with at ground level.

This will show you how the different positions affect how the implement is raised.

All good things to know for different implements used.

Top hole most of the time. The more parallel the top link is to the lift arms the less stress there is. If you need to lift higher you can go down.

The L4701 manual (page 55) says to use the lowest hole for mower and scraper, so that's what I (now) use for my bush hog, land plane, and landscape rake.

However, the dealership delivered it with the bush hog attached, and with it set to the highest hole. Sadly, the manual doesn't explain why to use the specified hole for the given implements.

Like someone up there posted before, I’ve always heard it as top hole for ground engagement work and bottom hole for lift.

Pick the hole that is the closest in distance from the lower links as the mounting points on the attachment for PTO powered implements. The reason is to minimize the difference in u-joint angles as the driveshaft is raised. Differing u-joint angles result in an acceleration/deceleration cycle at the implement each revolution of the shaft which not only causes excessive vibration but also premature wear on things. Ideally, you want the implement to rise vertically rather than in an arc.

On non-PTO implements, you can choose a combination that results in a swing along an arc for extra ground clearance.
