After finding the leaf I added enough fuel to bring the level up to the float for the fuel gauge. The cranked it up & let it suck the leaf to the fuel outlet. Then all the same symptoms showed their ugly heads. So, I celebrated by doing about an hours work to finish up what I was doing when it all happened.

That's great you can see the bottom of your tank. In the L3800, the tank is so convoluted you can't see past the first corner. I have a CARB fuel tank spout deep in the innards of my tank and after an hour of trying to fish it out, I asked the dealer. He said it was probably diesel capable and to just watch the fuel filter. After six months, no problems. Still would be nice to see the bottom of the tank!

California, please keep your crap in your own state and quit trying to tell the rest of us how to live.

Make sure that the fuel bleed valve is shut tight. Had mine loosen up after a few hours on my new tractor. It had the same symptoms.
