My starter went the other day. There was a nice cold puddle where I needed to lie ok my back to replace it. So I moved it with the tractor!

That time when a manual transmission is the cat’s pajamas. Roll it and dump the clutch. Newer vehicles don’t like roll starting though. I had a 92 F150 with a 5-speed behind a little 5.0. Can’t count the times I roll started it, just because I was sitting on a hill.

Have I mentioned that having the forks has been a game changer for moving logs, brush not so much, but logs, they are very good at that

This is my first auto trans vehicle. Can’t say I care for it. Wish I could have gotten a stick! But manual trucks are slim pickin’s these days. My brother went with a late 90s/early 00s F350 to get a stick. I really like the electric diff locks, backup camera, Apple Carplay, etc too much to do the same.

At 83, I am with your brother!
My E350 Mercedes is loaded with extraneous crap, that I do not need, or want!

It ain't over till it's over. After a spring like start to March it was cold and snowed a little bit every day this week. It was 7*F this morning and if the weather man is right we are getting a foot or more of snow tonight and tomorrow. So I took off the grapple and put on the snow plow.

Yeah, I drove manuals for YEARS because my ex couldn't. Easiest way to keep her outta my vehicle and make sure it didn't get dents in it.

You're right, though, manuals are disappearing. It probably costs too much to keep two transmission lines rolling, nevermind they can say they're geting rid of a maintenance issue (the clutch). What they don't tell you, though, is that you can't even check the transmission fluid any more. I'm guessing electronic shifting and powertrain management is improving the life and reliability of transmissions by protecting them from human error (aka stupidity), so that means no reason to check the fluid or service the filters, right? I don't think Ford offers a manual in anything but the Mustang and larger frame trucks now. At least not without special order.

The chubby one has been feeling left out and looked like she needed some exercise, so we went for a walk in the woods today and put up an owl box. 🥃
Who?

What kind of owls are you hoping to attract? I put up 3 more mountain chickadee houses the other day but no owl boxes. Any success with owls?

Haha….thats right😆.

That is in hopes of getting a Barred Owl to stick around. No success yet…that’s the first one I have put up. I do hear them and also I have see a rather large one while mowing….it was either a Barred or a great horned but I could not get a good enough look…it flew off.

We've been hearing a GHO often lately, night and day. I think nesting season is now. Real close to the house in the woods up the hill.

We've had a Red-tailed Hawk's nest 40 yards from the back door for several years. There's apparently one or two other hawk species up there too. Maybe have a GHO as well....

That’s awesome. Those are huge…it’s neat when you get a chance to see one.

Here is an informational site I’ve found helpful…

That is a great site. I used their info to build the chickadee houses to spec and mount them accordingly. I figured if I fed them all winter I might as well house them as well since that what socialists do!

August 2021 had a pretty decent size pine blow into the pond. Kind of hoped the stump would fall back in the hole but it didn’t. At the time, it was in an area that wasn’t cleared, I didn’t have the stump grinder or Piranha bar or skidding winch. So I just left the stump. First pic is what it was in 2021 before the final cut.
IMG_7939.jpeg

Some time later, wife wanted to make a seating area by the pond. Good idea. Stump was now at the edge of her seating area. Still pre-tooth bar. That and it’s too close to the edge of the pond to approach from the lower side to cut the roots. So it stayed.

That was then, this is now. After a two and a half years, figured the root cutting ability of the Pirahna and degradation of the stump might have intersected to allow removal. That and I was having an otherwise crappy day so I felt like some mindless destruction was order.

Neglected to photo today before starting so it’s already busted but wasn’t when I started. Cut off what roots I could get to and pushed it out.

A little bucket work to even things out, grass seed, and straw. Checked the weather radar, confirmed no need to apply any water, and went back in before the rain arrived.
