I can only get the mill to go forward.

The forward/reverse switch simply bypasses the speed control and reverses the battery polarity on the power feed motor so that should simply be a contact in the switch. I am looking forward to your sawing success.

On Thursday, I hauled fence posts and unloaded them with my B2601 forks. They are for trellises I am building for grapes. On Friday, I hauled topsoil and mulch into my barn with my front loader for the bases of chicken breeding pens. To come: today's big project of having a guy with a BX TLB use his backhoe to dig holes so I can set the trellis posts.

I don't have a rototiller, backhoe, or an auger, so I have been hiring a fellow with a BX 23 and those attachments. Found him on Craig's list. He's a fine young man and a real bargain. $75/hour for tractor work plus $75 travel time.

Today's project of digging holes for two grape trellises I am going to build took 3 hours. for 12 holes. He had an auger too but we stuck with the backhoe. We hit a ledge of shale, real common, at the end of the run. And a few other holes had mostly breakable shale.

Everywhere I have lived except the Florida beach town where I grew up, folks have complained about their clay. Now I may have them beat. When I dig the smallest hole in our clay, I bring a pick as well as a shovel. Shale is compressed clay, by the way. As rocks go, it is soft and brittle. But it laughs at diggers when it is a ledge. Our region is called the Shale Hill and Valley Ecoregion . . .

I put the snowblower on my JD X320. (for the son in law) and then went out and with the Kubota and blew the first snow of the season out of my driveways.

Bets of luck with the grapes Mossy dell! They are fun to grow - and grow fast.
30 years ago I found a farmer who had just cut down a load of cedar trees. I was told they wouldn't rot if used for a grape arbor. I used a PHD for digging the 16 holes and painted 1x3's strung between them for the grapes. Planted Delaware and Concord varieties. They produced a lot of grapes for 20 years.
Then a really severe ice storm took it all down. The grapes continued to grow until this past summer when I ripped them all out.
Looks like posts you are using won't be falling down any time soon

Hi Javert, why can’t you get the battery under the hood?

The one in the tray is bigger than the original one. The little battery that goes under the hood isn't good enough to cycle the glow plugs AND to crank it in an extremely cold weather. The room where the original battery goes is now taken by a small storage box for paperwork and stuff. (I still need to change the block heater on it.)

We went out to the farm yesterday. We got the MF383 back up and running. We went to work finishing clearing another spot.

Here is a before one

Hard to see, but there was a bunch of concrete blocks (7 buckets full) around the tree (one with the top intact). We cleaned that up and trimmed a low branch off the tree to make it easier access. Well, why we were working there, dad decided the larger tree with the top broken out of it needed to come down today. I pointed out that I only brought my MS170 saw, and the tree was going to be a challenge. After much looking and debate, the tree was completely hollow to the top. So, after clearing all the equipment back, started cutting on it and made about a six-inch cut on it, heard it popping and backed away.

It came right on down. Started trimming on the long branch sticking out and using the L3560 to haul the smaller branches to brush pile.

Ended up stopping because I needed my bigger saw, so the cleanup will have to wait until I come back out with my bigger Stihl to finish the job.

that sucks! Dealer left a key in mine twice, I called them to ask if they wanted them Back and they said I could keep them. So now I have 4 keys for it lol

I also have a 5 year old MS170; the cheapest saw that Stihl makes but it's also one of the handiest. That MS271 is a tried and proven 50cc saw. Well balanced and will get-r-done. I have purposefully stayed away from the "C-M, M-tronic" saws that require a Stihl service center and their laptop program.

Not much. Took the back blade off and stowed it on the patio out back. Like to have the blades close by in the winter, so I can get to them.

A year ago the 16th, we had 36” overnight. I blew about 5” before bed, and woke up to this at 0500.

I did 5 driveways that morning before 1000, two of which are long and wide.

One neighbor owns a pharmacy, and had to open the store. Another works for the Railroad, and had to go to work. Roads were closed, so I was off.

That little Kubota worked real hard for about 4 hours, and I refueled it later with just 3+ gallons of diesel.

The box blade in that spot was totally buried. Could only see a “bump” in the snow. Didn’t have the back blade then. Bought it this fall.

The MS170 is the saw that goes to the farm on most trips and the one I grab the most. It is lightweight and easy to use. Has been a wonderful saw and plan on getting many years of service from it.

For what it's worth, I have Stihls also.

MS211 and an older 046 Magnum. 211 is maybe 10+ years old; the 046 maybe 30 years old. Both bought used. Grew up with a Stihl 056 Super.

For a "little guy," the MS211 has been my go to for a while. Too old for M-tronic. It handles a 16" bar with "real" chain in decent fashion. I would not hesitate to look at a similar, non M-tronic saw again.

The 046 is kind of an Ox at 76cc/4.7 cu.in. There was a time I could have used a bigger saw, but those days have gone by.

I've shopped the MS362 a couple times, but shied away from the M-tronic stuff....

My next would probably be an MS400.

My 'big' saw is an MS362, non C-M. They make both and my dealer recommended the unit without the M-Tronic.

I have had it for over 2 years and for me it serves it's purpose. It wears a 25" bar/chain. That is a 42" Red Oak across the widest part.
