Wagon or Trailer

We don't usually use wagons on this side of the pond and you guys in USA seem to prefer them so I was curious enough to ask.

What are the advantages of wagons over trailers and vice-versa?

I have to think on this,
easier to hook up
easier to connect more than 1 together. Self contained, so the load is independent of the tow vehicle.
Zero tongue weight

Harder to back up.

You can pull a string of wagons without an extra axle . Balers and forage cutters and beet lifters often don't have drawbars that can support much weight so they work better there. If you want to leave something loaded unhooked the wagon is better. If you're leaving it hooked up the trailer is usually better. They handle better give you better traction and have fewer tires to maintain.

I was going to say we use the wagons because we circle them for defense.

Yet, the real reason was noted above, that we can unhook and leave them in spots and come back and get them later. Since the wagon had the extra axle, they are easy to drop about anywhere you need and they hold their own weight.

I think maybe we have the explanation. We use mostly pick-up hitches on the tractors here as opposed to fixed hitches like the Kubota. With the PU hitch we can drop the trailer off onto its built-in stand and go get another without leaving the seat but I think maybe your tractors have fixed hitches so the wagon is handier.

How do wagons cope with uneven ground? And does it take more power to pull 4 wheels as opposed to 2?

What are you hauling on it? It may depend.

re: pulling power. less with 4 wheels for the same weight of load as there's less rolling resistance

wagons( 4 wheels) are safer for any load as they're more stable.

re: backing up. All it take is practice to backup a wagon. I've know farmers who could backup TWO wagons, loaded with hay, UP a ramp into their barns.

Takes more weight to pull 4 because you need it for the traction, so in real world, you're looking at a bigger tractor for 4.

Wagons don't sink in as easily in soft soil.
Most wagons have wider flotation tires.
trailers do much better at speeds as most wagons tend to whip about at speeds.

We always used wagons on the farm, but always used trailers on the ranch.
