Both of the hydraulic cylinders for the bucket tilt on my LA402 were leaking. I removed them both and took them to my dealer for him to rebuild. When I picked them up, they were in the fully compressed position. When I went to install them I had to extend them out a bit and when I did one of the O-rings is sitting freely on the inner cylinder (see pic). This is the case for both cylinders.

This doesn't look normal to me. I plan on talking to the dealer in the morning, but I'm not a patient man, so I thought I'd ask the forum. Is this normal or should I be concerned? I'm reluctant to start the tractor, as I don't want to make a mess with leaking (and expensive) super UDT and I don't want them to be a mess if I need to haul them back to the dealer. Should I take them back or is all good?

Thanks in advance,
Gary

I may be mistaken but I believe that o ring is installed to protect the outward seal on the cylinder from paint when the cylinder is painted after repair.

That is interesting and VaGlock, that's a great thought. Doesn't appear as though they didn't paint them but that doesn't mean they didn't put them on just in case.

However, just to be safe, gcmiller, you might want to check with the dealer to make sure.
I just realized I was no help at all:)

The LA525 on my new L2501 has those although a bit slimmer.
I just assumed they were there for something related to manufacturing. Paint makes sense.

My tractor had those when I viewed it at the dealer. They were gone at delivery.

Thanks for all of the replies everyone. I feel much better about it. I've never seen these before, but it sounds like they're common. I can see them being there to protect the outward seal like VaGlock said.

Thanks again

Present on my LA 525 and I assume they are meant to act as a rod wiper.

A rod wiper also makes perfect sense.

I went ahead topped off the fluid, started up the tractor and ran the bucket in all directions and everything is great. No leaks. It looks like I worried over nothing. It's just something I've never seen before. I thought maybe it was the outer seal, or some other gasket, had come through.
