Trans oil

You can buy UDT at parts stores, tractor supply etc. They all seem to be okay. My dealer, however, said that they have had excellent and noticeable performance improvement with Kubota's UDT 2. He said they can actually define the differences. It's a good bit more expensive but worth the increase in price.

That is one of those age old questions - but as rentthis said - it is well worth it.
On a newer machine, I would highly recommend it - on an older machine that has 1000's of hours on it, not sure it would be the best money spent.
The cost of it does look high - but it is well worth it!

But if the oil meets the same specs as Kubota why would you want to spend twice as much money?
Of course a Kubota dealer is going to tell you his oil is superior!

well, if you look at all synthetic oils - there are lots of them, and most are the about the same price......but are all better than the oils they replace......
so - I am sure that there is a equal oil to the kubota oil ......but the cost of THAT synthetic blend......is not the same blend that Kubota sought out when they created their oil - or not the same as what they called for some other company that blended the oil for Kubota........
so - the moral of the story ......they all meet or exceed the gov spec sheet, but kubota may have wanted something that is higher or lower for the specific needs of their pumps ...etc.....
Store brand soda sells for about $.80 a bottle, why pay $2 for Coke?
Try them both, there is a difference. You get what you pay for.

An interesting thought is, humans spend a lot of money to make sure their material things are in good condition and will last. Oils, greases, wax, shelter for vehicles. Hire someone to feed, water and watch animals while we're gone. Paint and winterize our homes. Yet we overeat and drink and under exercise!! We do thing to shorten our lives but take care of stuff!!

Depends on what "specs" it meets. I haven't found a single fluid on the market (yet) that compares to super UDT2. And I've tried several.
UDT-different story. UDT is regular UDT. Mineral based. In HST's, super UDT2 is noticeably quieter, and doesn't run quite as hot, as regular UDT does in the same HST.
I was always a brand name skeptic, and still am. But I changed the tran oil in my F2560, and used generic tran oil. It made a lot more noise, and I even think the treadle valve worked harder. After 50 hrs, I said the heck with it, and put in the UDT-2 Kubota Synthetic. They don't give it away! Remarkable difference. Sticky treadle gone, tran whine cut significantly. I remain a brand name skeptic, but not in all cases! 
The trans / hyd system is one place where you can see, feel and hear the difference when you use cheap oil. The same applies to engine oil but you can't see so in your mind everything is good.

X10 on what everyone above has mentioned about getting what you paid for and SUDT2 making HST quieter and working better. No more whine, MUCH quieter, better operation at cold temps...all benefits of a quality synthetic oil.
If you're running some old GST or Manual trans machine, regular UDT is likely fine...but for an HST machine? SUDT2 is worth it, even if you're putting in 10 gallons at a clip. I pay about $95 for a 5 gal of SUDT2...so to change the UDT on a $20,000 L series machine you're talking $200 every 3-5 years average? 1% of the machine cost? Come on guys...cut corners elsewhere but not on your hydrostatic trans which costs THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS to replace.
