My Dad worked for the Montour RR got his machinist papers there, and as a kid sometimes he would take me and we would ride around in a little Joe yard burner, and the engineer, I assume he was an engineer, would let me pull the chain for the whistle sometimes. Those were heady times for a kid, alas like so many things ,they are all but gone and forgotten only to be remembered as an item of curiosity for kids today. Wish I could hear those whistles again

I was on vacation in Cuba several years ago, and on one tour, I got to sit in the engineer's seat of an old Soviet steam engine that was pulling a tourist tour. Once we were rolling along, I mentioned to the actual "engineer" that their crossing signal is exactly the same in Canada (_ _ . _), as we approached the first road.
From that point on, he let me blow the whistle before every crossing...

I did a tour of the roundhouse at the Durango-Silverton yard a couple years ago. They said their maintenance staff is about to retire and the young kids today don't want to work on overhauling locos. These wonderful rolling museums may grind to a halt if they cannot get people interested in helping keep the rolling stock running.

The young generation is all thinking of getting easy money, and no one wants to come into this industry. Building those beautiful trains was a very respected job in the past, everyone knew how much work and knowledge it required. Now, the process is getting automated, but maybe this good from one side, because it won't die, at least, less people have the intention to work in this field. Traveling by trains from https://www.dbfahrplan.com/de/ it's a unique experience, and I hope that it will last as long as possible, so the new generations can feel it as well.

My grandfather was an engineer for the Illinois Central RR. He ran both the Panama Limited and City of New Orleans lines. He retired sometime in mid 50's before I was born. I do remember him walking me from kindergarten to the depot to see the trains, talk to the engineers he knew and the people that worked on the train. We would look to things along the tracks before we would walk back to their house. Good times.......I miss him

Lot of good memories :)

My uncle was a conductor on the old New Haven Railroad. One time my aunt took me to the Bronx Zoo on the train. My uncle got me into the locomotive and the engineer let me 'drive' the train (at least keep my foot on the dead man's switch). Almost 70 years ago and I still smile when I think of it.
